Update on Operation Rushbo

Posted by Tom Bevan | Email This | Permalink | Email Author

Last week Jon Martin of Politico reported that Democrats had launched a concerted effort to paint Rush Limbaugh as the face and leader of the Republican Party.

The plan, originally hatched by former Clinton operatives James Carville and Paul Begala, quickly expanded to include current White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and was "explicitly authorized" by Senior Advisor to the President David Axelrod, according to a report in Monday's New York Times.

Mr. Carville praised the Democrats' "Limbaugh strategy" as "great for us, great for him, great for the press," adding, "The only people he's not good for are the actual Republicans in Congress."

So far, the only thing we know for certain is that the strategy has indeed been great for El Rushbo. On Wednesday's program, Mr. Limbaugh announced that revenue for his nationally syndicated radio program in the first quarter of this year was up 13.5% versus the same time period a year ago. That's no small accomplishment given the current state of the economy.

Mr. Limbaugh also said that a recently completed Arbitron study showed that his total listenership was up 32%. This number is even more impressive, Mr. Limbaugh noted, when you consider it's a percentage increase over his already record-breaking national audience.

"Over the years," Mr. Limbaugh declared, "every effort to divide me from you, my audience, has only strengthened the bond."

For their part, Democrats feel the strategy is paying dividends as well. Mr. Carville's polling firm, Democracy Corps, released a new survey this week suggesting Mr. Limbaugh is exceedingly unpopular among all but the most conservative voters and that his image "weighs down heavily on an already weakened Republican Party."

According to the poll, conducted between March 4 and March 8, Mr. Limbaugh is viewed unfavorably by 53% of voters, with 45% of those viewing him "very" unfavorably. Fifty-seven percent of voters say Mr. Limbaugh does not share their values, and 52% say "Republican leaders should denounce Rush Limbaugh's destructive attacks on President Obama."

I would not hold my breath waiting for that to happen. Congressional Republicans are betting that by the time voters go to the polls next November, they'll be more concerned with what President Obama and the Democrats have done (or failed to do) than with what Rush Limbaugh has done or said.

In the meantime, however, with Mr. Limbaugh's audience growing and Mr. Carville's polls suggesting the talk show host continues to be viewed unfavorably by a majority of Americans, don't expect Operation Rushbo to conclude anytime soon.

Reminds me of the Nixon White House and its enemies list. It may be good politics, but it puts the Office of the President in a terrible light. After all, he's Rush's president, too.

Is this the change we were supposed to believe in?

I think the Dems plan will backfire, bigtime. Rush is no mumblin', stumblin' George 'Dubya' Bush. He is a man of articulate, erudite words, and he will dedicate the next two years to ripping the Democratic Congress, and the President, new ones.

I think the new Three Stooges, (Carville, Begala, & Emmanuel), with their Dimwitted Dem cronies, have miscalculated terribly, and have bitten off more than they can chew. Rush shall eat them up & spit them out. mad.gifclapping.gifclapping.gif

The old adge is, 'Choose your enemies, and targets, carefully'. The Dems have failed to heed the inherent wisdom of this expression.

As a strategy, I like it. Chairman Steele's apology to Rush probably inspired it, and it's shrewd - look who the Chairman of the GOP has to defer to!

There is no way the current Democratic majority in the House can hold up. First, the voters no longer have a President Bush at whom to vent their irritation. Second, there is no way a President in this economic, political and military situation can avoid disappointing lots of voters. In another few months, it's Obama's recession and Obama's war in Iraq and Obama's war in Afghanistand and Obama's .... whatever. So a loss of some House seats is a given; the party out of power always gains in midterm elections.

By the time this happens, the fuss over Rush Limbaugh will be long forgotten.

As soon as the economy turns for the better expect Rush's ratings to fail off back to normal levels. IMO, talk radio which has historically been a listening ground for more conservative type people. When things in the economy get bad you just have more people who used to be happy doing something else now listening in. The worse things get the better for guys like Rush. It's no wonder he would like things to fail in that regard....

It doesn't take a genius to see this but it sure as hell feels good to spin it like there is a higher meaning to all this.....And I am referring to both sides of the fighting on that....

i am one of rushes new(old) listeners. i have been tuning in lately, when i can to hear what he has to say about this new flap.

i think the old adage applies here with some modifications; don't pick fights with people that buy ink by the barrel, or in this case has 4 hours a day of air time to fill.

We'll see. The more people (who aren't already admirers) listen for the first time to him, in this context, the happier the Democrats will be. At least for the short term. Long term, who knows?

I'm your enemy because I think there are folks like you who are nothing but neo communist punks with delusions of intelligence.

I think if leftists like you had it your way, they would set up little gulags and arrest anyone they didn't like. I think people of your stripe love show trials and drumhead courts.

I think people like you are a desease on the American polity and will eventually destroy the U.S. and when we become that weak, we will deserve being destroyed.

I think people like you have done nothing for this country because they are cowards but talk a great game.

And by the way, I want Obama's socialist agenda to fail miserably and if it becomes entrenched, I hope to help overthrow it.
