Willow - Stubby Needles

I went to my girlfriends parents house in Upstate NY in Feb. they have a willow tree in a field that has been down for about 5 years I sawed off a couple of pieces and brought them home to turn.

The wood is obviously past its prime. but not really rotten, still solid, but is a very light wood, turns like butter. there we quite a few grub looking things living in it so it has some holes but nothing that the fish will complain about. I usually make this style out of Maple, Mahogany or Oak it will be interesting to see how they swim as Willow.

I made a few lures out of willow a couple years back. It did turn and sand nice and the plugs worked great. After fishing them a bit some of the paint wrinkled, like the wood was moving under the paint and etex. I think willow acts like a sponge and I think they where not completely sealed even after a good long dip in BLO. I have a few pieces left. I think I may try epoxy sealing as I have seen some other builders do.
