704z drag

How do you know the drag is bad on a reel specifically a 704z?? I bought a 704z used and I am concerned that the drag may be worn out from abuse from the previous owner. Can the drag of the 704z be replaced?

This is a no-brainer, anyone-with-10-left-thumbs-can-do-it job. Most tackle shops will have the replacement washers. They also fit a 706, a 7500 and an 8500.

There are 7 washers and a spring clip in the 704 drag. 4 of the washers are metal (chromed brass), two of them are fiber (HT-100 material) and one of them is Teflon. Of the 4 metal ones, 2 will be hex shaped, and 2 will be round with a slotted (keyed) center hole.

Take out the spring clip carefully and dump the old washers out. Use a small screwdriver to wedge any ones that are stuck out of the spool. Put one of the hex shaped metal washers in the base of the spool. Put the Teflon one in next. Then put in one of the round metal washers with the slotted hole in next. Then a fiber one, then the second hexed shaped one, then the last fiber one, followed by the last slotted-hole one.

Put the spring clip back in and press it down so it's seated against the last metal washer all the way around. Then, take a pencil and align each of the slotted washers so the slots coincide with each other. Align the slots on the washers with the flat sides of the spool shaft when you put the spool back on, screw on the drag knob, and go fish.
