NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - The Navy has christened its sixth Virginia-class nuclear submarine.

The New Mexico was christened Saturday at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding in Newport News by officials from the Navy, Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics Electric Boat.

The 377-foot-long, $2.3 billion fast-attack submarine is scheduled to be handed over to the Navy in August, eight months ahead of schedule.

The Navy has a multibillion-dollar plan to replace Los Angeles-class submarines with 30 Virginia-class subs. The first 10 Virginia-class subs are constructed under a joint arrangement between Northrop Grumman and Connecticut-based Electric Boat

Electric Boat recently contracted to build 8 more; it will be interesting to see what 'Oh bummer' does about those (the gov't always leaves themselves an out so they can cancel) and what the Dem congressmen in always blue Connecticut will then have to say. shaky.gif

We're still waiting for Dodd to tell us how he came to have a sweetheart mortgage deal from Countrywide Finance, as he promised he would over six months ago. We're hoping this zero will decide not to run for another term - so Connecticut can replace him with another lib loser. kooky.gif

View PostI love leaving port in Groton and looking over at EB, it's a great send off on the the Ferry ride over to B.I.

Only two weeks ago, we headed over to Orient Pt on the ferry and saw one sub at the plant that looked like it was ready to go...it was docked and had all sorts of plant personel standing around on it...I wonder if this is the sub in question.
