1. A common myth...but a myth none the less that pit bulls enjoyed widespread popularity from the turn of the century through the 1950's. There was a national study done surveying adds for dogs/puppies for sale from newspaper records around the country during that time period and I believe pit bulls(including AMPT and Staffordshire together) were 25th of the 34 breeds used in the sample. The newspaper record survey was thought to be a more accurate sampling of dogs actually present in househoulds since some dogs would be registered with the UKC and not the AKC...may not have been recognized by one of the two at that time..or just not plain registered.

2. How about the reason why the official name became the Staffordshire instead of pit bull....breed enthusiasts were trying to sway the image of the dog away from its recently banned use in bloodsport...to make it seem like a proper dog for the show ring. Most blood sport with pit bulls was "officially" banned pretty early on...but continued, and continued here in the US with bloodlines brought from Europe.

3. Pit's are a great tool for the right job...I have a place in South Texas and there are tons of working pits around that are used as catch dogs for hogs...just not pets.

No people were ever yet benefited by riches if their prosperity corrupted their virtue....

200 lb mastiff scares me alot more than anything ending in terrier.

here is my little man. sweetest dog youll ever meet. never once acted in an aggressive manner to another dog, human, great with kids. he sleeps with the cat for gods sake. well socialised and trained by me since 8 weeks old. again, responsible ownership is the key here. maybe spend your time trying to ban handguns or something instead, they kill alot more people than friggan dogs.
