Sealing w/ Oil Based Primer

Rate this topic

Has anyone tried sealing their plugs with oil based primer that has been thinned instead of boiled linseed oil.

I used this method tonight. Soaked for approximately 5 mins and there was substantial bubbling on the surface of the plug, so it appears to have soaked in. I am hoping this will allow for priming and sealing to be completed in one step.

If you do a search of this topic there has been much written and experimented with...Personally I seal with val oil/ turp 60/40. then double dip prime with oil based Zinsser/mineral spirits 50/50. Entire process requires much dry time in a very dry area. Seal ...72 hours drying...dip 24 hours drying ...second dip 72 hours drying. Paint!

Oil based primer is a primer not a sealer, it will still let moisture though. It still takes two step, seal and then prime. It would be nice to do it in one. Spend all that time making the plug and if you don't prep it right it will split on you.frown.gif
