I would like to start using a two handed rod in the surf just because,

Any one with any opinions or advice pro or con on building your own shooting heads as oppossed to buying integrated store bought lines.

I consider my self an average caster and do build my own for single handed rods.

appreciate any input.

For what rod?

It is possible to find cheap DT lines which are not in favor anymore. They should be at least 10wt but 12wt is better so they have enough weight. Especially sinking DT lines are cheap and good material. Usually one DT line becomes two heads and left over level from the middle can be used as a sinking tip.

Another option is to buy 12/13wt medium belly Spey line which weights over 900gr where you can get two lines with different tapers. One from front which becomes longer and one from rear which becomes shorter. Possibly both does not weight enough for same rod.

TH rods have wide "grain window" and polyleaders are great for tuning tapers, sink rates and when delicacy is needed and fly size is varied a lot.
