Let me rephrase that..

When can I start fishing where I'll catch fish using the plugs/darters/etc... that i used around October. I know April for KEEPING, but im not interested in keeping, interested in going out there, fishing, catching fish.

I dont wanna go out there and realize im wasting my time because theres no fish around due to the very cold waters.

Adam, before dusting off the gear go get yourself Z's book, The Art of Surfcasting With Lures" .... A must read !!!!

Also, the Freeport show is next weekend, there are some good surf seminars, check them out.

Earliest I ever caught a migrant bass on LI was April 1. That bite is on bait though. Plugs like darters aren't widely used in very early season unless you find aggressive fish on adult bunker, still chunking will probably work best. One early season night I plugged the area hard for one rat bass in an hour. I took out the chunks and took two 30" fish in 5 minutes until I had to move off the bar.

View PostWhens Striper season start back up? I just got into it at the end of last year, and now hafta wait... soooo when can I grab my gear and head for the beach again?

Figure on late March or April, depending on water temps and bait availability. Look for shallower estuaries that warm up quicker and fish them wink.gif. Or head up the Hudson and dunk worms.

View Poststripers ideal water is 64-65 degrees..so if the water is in the teens you know thats to cold..

Water in the teens=solid ice biggrin.gif. Don't think there'd be bass at that point.

Start fishing in March. The big bunker are already here with the herring and BIG BASS will be on them like lies on crap.

Every year is the same where I go, Big fish feeding before the spawn...
