Point Pleasant fisherman killed in freak accident

The Associated Press

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J. - Friends and relatives are mourning a Point Pleasant fisherman with a heart of gold who died doing what he loved best.

Fifty-three-year-old Bill Meldrum died Tuesday when his legs became tangled in machinery aboard the boat he was working on five miles off the Manasquan Inlet.

He was aboard his boat, the Lydia J, while trawling the ocean bottom for yellowtail and flounder.

He died from massive blood loss despite intensive rescue efforts by state Marine Police and the Coast Guard.

His wife says he would buy toys for area children each Christmas, and bought new boots for poor fishermen.
