jfbasser
Who is the youngster in this photo with Stan Gibbs. Word is that the youngster won a fishing contest or drawing to get the opportunity to fish with Stan. The photo was taken on that fishing trip. If anyone could identify the youngster and provide any info about his current location (via PM) it would be appreciated by those of us that are forever delving into the moments of Stans past. Photo is probably from the late 60s. foxfai
Don't know the guy but I have questions about the picture.... Why is Mr. Gibbs using a conventional reel AND boat rod from shore? (assuming he isn't on a boat...)
stripersurfster
Not a boat rod. That's a surf rod. "well, outside of moderators wishing death upon us, everything is good."

(assuming he isn't on a boat...) not a boat rod. and the conventional reel was the reel of choice for sharpies back in the day. you had to be a pro to really know how to handle the kind of gear you see him holding. old harnell rods for example run around 9 feet. you can't even begin to compare the gear from those days to what is available today. do some research and see what those guys used...you'll be humbled. jfbasser
I am most impressed by Mr. Gibbs' wading belt. Cinched tight, as always, even on a quiet morning with a young boy. A true surf fisherman with the surf rod of the day. canalcowboy
The Rod Stan was using was atleast a 10' Harnell and a Jigmaster reel by the looks of it. Most fisherman used the surfmaster or squider but Stans hands were so large that when he gripped the rod and reel to cast, his thumb could lay over the bar to control the spool speed. the jigmaster spool size gave him the advantage to get that extra distance. My hands are average size and it was difficult to control the jigmaster vs. the squider. Don't know the young fisherman though. He must be in his fifties by now. CC: you're right, big difference today vs back then. I have two of the rod and reel set ups as pictured by Mr. Gibbs that are still fishable and sitting together in my basement. The rods I have (Utica Stripers) have full cork in the front and varnished long wooden handles that were slippery when they got wet in the surf. On the reels (Penns) we used the 'old type black colored braid'. Prime spots then were Nauset Beach and Race Point. Now fast forward to my bailess VS 250's and my Lami Custom Super Surfs that seem a world apart but still just a rod and reel and fishing the same spots. Not fishing this morning but just before the front came through yesterday was okay. GREAT PHOTO MR BASSER!
bob_G
That was the equipment all of us used back in the day. That was as good as it got! I still have an old 10' Harnell with an ancient Squidder on it, that will eventually find it's way on the wall among all my retired fishing gear. The rod was wrapped by none other than the Canal Cowboy himeslf. My Dad bought this blank off Paul Kukonen back in the mid 60's, and it was the rod I used for the first 15 years I fished. The rod more resembles a tent pole than a fishing rod. Certainly not what we're currently used to using. The Harnell is pretty banged up, but structurally sound. My plan is to take off all the guides and cork tape, rewrap it in the traditional red/yellow Harnell colors, and retired it. Dave D
I Currently use 3 Harnells. I have used a 9 1/2', marked "36#" that is the best jigging rod I have ever used. With a newell 235F. I have owned it for 20 years. It originally had a red top sticker on it. 2 spinning rods that are heavy after fishing a while, but great for tossing eels. I have broken 20-3 of them, I just save the guides & re wrap them. I still pick up harnells @ flea markets from time to time
Angler #1
in the picture won a fishing contest that was conducted by the Boston Globe to fish with Stan. No name is given on my paper work that Stan used to advertise his hand carved fish he started to make. Judging from the gear and equipment I would estimate the picture was taken around the 60' s some where??? Now if any one has any contacts at the Globe you may be able to pull up an old story about the contest to help brother John with his request Life member M.B.B.A #509 Life member Izaak Walton Fishing Association Life member Cape Cod Canal

It is a great photo, we need to see a few more of that type of photo today, rather than surf crashing on someone with a dry-top. jfbasser
Well, Angler provided the link and we got the same hit, but we are unsure of the hit as to its date and other specifics. I am not ready for a monthly membership to "newspaperarchive dot com". Called the Globe sports desk and they are getting hits later than 1979 only because older papers are not digtized......the Globe Sports desk suggests the Boston Public Library if we knew the date Looks like we need to send Joe Gee to the library for us Canal FlyRodder & Member SG3CFCI dunk my VS because I carry a self repair kit at all timesLove those La y, Ha y, Day of Summer
