StormCaster
I have a 7000iSync reel that my daughter uses on the beach occasionally. I have notice several times that the shock leader knot moves from side to side on the spool. Several times I've had to cut away line to move it over for her so she would not rip her thumb open during the cast. Anyway I have since re-spooled that reel with 40# mono with a top shot leader. I had replaced the pawl once just to make sure and again the shock leader knot is moving from side to side. One particular time that I did cast the reel with it in free spool it engaged during flight. The sound was horrific ratcheting sound, but otherwise the reel has had no problem. jimmy z
How about just spooling it with say, 65# braid? I use that # test on my 7000's, and it works well. And I just tie on a leader, and don't have that knot to contend with. Just an idea. I don't know too much about those SYNC reels, but it might just be one more thing to go wrong. I like simple. I've had a Hubilie 777 reel(same as 7000 internals) jump into gear on the cast, I had to replace the A/R dog on that one. StormCaster
Jimmy Simple is always best for the better part. Basically if you turn the reel 1/4 turn back it cuts the drag down by 75% from where it is set. Turn the reel 1/4 turn forward it is on full drag. I had never thought about putting braid on that reel. I am afraid she is not like her old dad in casting and there maybe a big bird nest. I just may take that reel and shelve it to put back the old 7000C3. It would be great if I could get her to use one of my open face reels. Thanks for the reply. jimmy z
I did some searching about that reel, I was curious about the drag thing. Interesting. From my experiece with the newer 7000i's, and I have three of them, is that they are very hard to backlash. I like 'em, for casting, even with braid. Ken D
Hio folks. The syncro feature is handy for strong fish, when the drag setting has been altered during the battle, to very strong, or: strong from the git-go. When a fish comes close to net, beach, or boat, it often turns and runs very hard. With a strong drag setting, the hook can pull out, the line can break, the rod can break. The syncro feature aids the rodster by reducing the drag by about half, with a fast _back_ turn of the handle. A forward turn of the crank resets the drag back to the stronger setting. Real handy, if the fish runs: just turn the crank backwards, and back to forward, when the time is right. This can happen as often as necessary during the battle. StormCaster
Jimmy I've had her return me the reel several times with the biggest back lash that I immediately cut out the line with a scissor. Actually for myself the reel is very tame and you are correct almost fool proof. What 65# braid do you suggest? Ken I have heard her tell me how one of her big bass (45") ran so hard that she had to turn down the drag to 25% to watch the spool being nearly empty. Then she engaged the fish with the full drag and did this a few more times. Anyway I was taken back when she stopped by the house with the bass. jimmy z
I use Spiderwire Stealth braid, on all of my casting reels. 50# on my 6500's and 65# on my 7000's. Does she feather the spool with her thumb? Even with the tame reels, that is a must. Sudsy
I like to do all my own repairs and maintenance and I've only been defeated by one reel - the Abu Synchro. Took it apart and COULD NOT get it back together Had to send it in, in pieces in a box to be put back together at Abu (thanks Bob ) Be very careful taking it apart, all kinds of springs and washers Play it safe, take digital pictures as you remove each piece. Ken D
Hio, Suds....was that a current 7000i syncro, or one of the older 7000C syncros?

jimmy z
I've used up to 80# braid. It's got a pretty thick diameter. Or Gorilla Braid in 50# test. Now that will work! Try it. I opened the reel again and it is in good condition. Sudsy Seems complicated for myself to take apart a reel and trying to put it back. Generally I keep an extra reel in the house to avoid any down time. I lent a buddy one of my 7500C3CT reels that he somehow popped off the clicker. Anyway I didn't want to dismount my other reel on a rod, so I went to closet to retrieve a spare. Well, after opening it up . . . it took like 3 hours with trying to get those two little micro springs back in place with forceps and duct tape to hold the outside clicker part. I can only imagine how long it would take for a novice to put a reel back together again.
