Fishing IBSP the other day,I had been fishing for about 4 hours and this guy sets up fairly close to me,not close enough to mug me but close.I managed a couple of shorts for my time there,an this guy catches 4 fish in 45 minutes 2 of which were keepers. We were using the same rigs and bait.

The only difference was that he was getting out farther than me.

Any tips for improving casting distance?

He caught all the fish by then. tongue.gifwink.gif

Seriously, sometimes they are a little further out.

Sometimes just a few yards makes the difference in casting distance.

Just the other day, I was fishing with hatman on my left, then Bristol Lou, then Lou's buddy, then five other guys. There was maybe fifty yards from me to the last guy on my left. I was nailing fish, and so was Lou's buddy, while Hatman and Lou got one each. Lou's buddy and I were using different lures, but I noticed he and I were outcasting all the others by maybe five yards, if that. Now, fifteen feet or less dont sound like much, but our lures were getting down to the depth/strike zone of the feeding fish. While everyone else might have ben reaching the same fish in distance, but missing the strike zone/depth. Hatman was five yards from me using the exact same lure, but missing the fish.

First thing I'd ask you is if your spool is completely filled. If so, with what?

If yer spool is full, and ya werent using some kinda heavy line, and as you say, you were using the same weight-etc. as the other guy who was catching, I'd tell you that yer rod was at fault. I've never seen you cast, so I cant say for sure it's your mechanics. But that is another possibility. We were joined later on by another buddy of mine who had a rod long and strong enough to get the correct distance, and he was using the same lure as me and fishing just to my right. But his mechanics are horrible, and he couldnt get half the distance I was getting.

Normally, around here distance is the last thing we worry about, as the fish are very much in or near the wash. But somedays a few yards makes a difference. Very often I dont cast near as far as I can, as it's wasted effort and time.

Hey Joe, were you plugging or soaking bait? If you were soaking bait, your rig might have something to do with it. If you use a fish finder rig, most times when you cast, the whole thing will "helicopter" and cost you distance. Me personally, I use hi-low rigs. With the sinker on the bottom, its almost like the sinker keeps everything in line and cast alot farther. But something that I've tried recently is a "Far Out Rig". I have fallen in love with them. It's basically a fish finder rig with an impact shield that makes the sinker carry the bait out by keeping everything together like a hi-lo rig. I bought one, and made my own using the original one as a sample. I use this rig on a 10" all star breakaway, and it's like a rocket.

I fish with my girfriend alot and use 3 poles between the both of us. When I started using the Far out rig, I would have my GF throw hers, then I'd throw a hi-low rig a little farther out, then I shoot the rocket past the bar. On quite a few outings, the one wayyy out would catch the fish while the other 2 sat in the spikes farting.

I fish IBSP a lot. I drive a gold nissan frontier with a cooler rack on the front and a big G.Loomis fish bones decal on the back window. If you see me drive by, flag me down and I'll give you one to try out. You'll be amazed. I can triple the distance of a normal fish finder rig with it. Just think how far it would go if I were using a conventional!!
