Kaldsk
Im currently working on a 710 greenie and im having a tough time removing the main gear (part #8) it spins pretty freely and has a little give but it wont seem to pull out for me. ive soaked it for awhile and it that hasnt helped, the guts are in very good shape with no corrosion or anything but im nervous to mess with any of the anti reverse pieces that are there if i dont need too, also handle washer appears to be the only piece on the entire reel that is stuck in place, cant tell if its corrosion that is keeping it in place or not. anyone have any ideas on how to safely remove these pieces, especially the main gear? i just picked this reel up and it the turning the handle on it was a workout in itself, but to my surprise there was no corrosion in this baby, and after breaking it down i can tell that the issue is somewhere in between handle and main gear. also anyone have any recommendations for replacing the pinion bearing? this one seems ok but im sure after sitting for god knows how many years it could benefit from an upgrade. thanks
Gollum
I hate to point out the obvious, but have you removed the handle? The main gear will not come out without removing the handle. Then once you remove the screw on the top side of the main gear, the main gear will just drop out. You can push on the threaded end underneath the handle if it doesn't. Otherwise, it should come out easily. As for the bearing, you can use an L shaped metal object or even the head of a nail upside down. Work the object underneath the bearing and it should come out easily. How we wish to catch a fish so juicy sweet.
Kaldsk
yeah im pretty sure i removed the handle here's where im stuck. maybe I'm just not pushing it with enough force, but i dont want to damage anything
Gollum
Sorry, like I said, I hate to point out the obvious. Can you slide the pinion gear out? I imagine it is stuck as well. Try twisting the threaded end where the handle is attached as you push. The main gear really shouldn't be that hard to get out. Other than that, run it under some really really hot water to see if you can loosen some of the grease. If you are turning it in the proper direction as you push, you can really push as hard as you want. You aren't going to be able to hurt much. Let me know what happens. Kaldsk
yeah the pinion gear i couldnt get out either, but that seems to be because it is threaded with with the main gear which is holding. i was turning the piece where the handle is attached, ive had it soaking some more, i will try running it under hot water and giving it a shot thanks will let you know how it goes

Heat from hot hot water helped me when I had one get stuck. You might have a bent shaft on your main gear if it is that hard to get out. That would be a problem! Another thought I had is that there is a grease nipple on the housing on the conical portion of the housing that slopes towards the handle. You could put a load of oil in there to try to un-seize anything. How we wish to catch a fish so juicy sweet.
Marlinmate
Kaldsk...Looks like you've got issues. Have you tried to put the threaded handle end of the main gear on a hard surface and press down...essentially pushing the maing gear out of the handle side? You must have some serious corropsion in your handle stem on the body of the reel...The main gear shold just fall out....do what Gollum said...try heat and or try heat and a hard wack
Marlinmate
Also...take the dog out by undoing the screw....It shouldn't be in the way of anything, but if you say it was hard to turn, then maybe the dog jumped a cog or is not seated properly. Just a thought

Is there any reason for it? Corrosion? Is the shaft bent? I don't think the bushing is intended to come out. I think it is part of the housing. Penn does not list an individual part for it. Marlinmate
I have never found the need to get the bushing out. Usually a good cleaning with a round wire brush will free up what is inside. Take a pic so we can see what the inside looks like. You must've had some serious trash in there???? Marlinmate
Part #2-710 is the bronze bushing. You will need 2, one for the handle side of the body and one on the inside of the body
Kaldsk
ok, better if the busing dont have to come out. there was definitely some nasty in there, just a bunch of gunk. heres some pics of the inside of it and the main gear now that its out. i already rinsed them a bit. Kaldsk
i saw the parts listing for the bushing, was just hoping they were not vital or necessary to get out.
Gollum
Sorry, I was thinking of something else! What's the plan from here? Clean it up and go fishing? Restore? How we wish to catch a fish so juicy sweet.
