after getting a nice presentation about being prepared, and not overprepaired by Mr. Shipwreck himself, I definately will re-iterate my stance, which is all that crates on the kayak do is add

-wind resitance

-weight(thus raising your center of gravity)

-and most importantly the ability for you to feel the need to bring every lure you own with you, while in actuality you'll probably only use 3 or 4 lures the whole day.

I really like the crate. I keep everything in there and never worry about forgetting essential gear. Mine holds 2 plano boxes for fly and spin tackle, a waterproof pouch (vhf, cell phone, gps, compass and light), a spare paddle (cheapy 4-piece), a small soft cooler, and my gloves, pliers and lip-gripper. I built a fly rod holder on it that frees the flushmounts for spinning rods and keeps the long rod out of the way. When I grab that crate I know I have everything.

I'm sure there is some effect on wind resistance and center of gravity, but not enough to notice. Remember that anything producing wind resistance hurts you going upwind and helps you downwind. wink.gif

I agree with the less is more philosophy. I too have gotten away from the crate. Unless I'm going out for an extended trip, I keep most of my stuff strung together in a few small boxes that I can access through the center hatch. My best advice is start slow. Don't start cutting/drilling holes before you have actually fished, caught fish and landed fish in the boat. You will get a feel for where your stuff should be over time.

Example, I wish my anchor trolley was on the other side. I tend to land most of my fish on the same side. Now I have to be careful not to get trebles caught in the anchor system as I land a fish.

Also, I would add an anchor trolley to your list. I often fish strong currents windy conditions. The trolley helps me stay pointed at the fish, especially when flyfishing.

Good luck, have fun!

This one shows a lure holder that I made from golf bag tubes. It just wedges into the cupholder, and pops right out when done. I use it to hold a few lures that I am actively using.

Thats my kind of packing! I like less is more too.

Love the golf tube idea. Ever use tennis ball tubes for larger lure storage?biggrin.gif
