I recently took a lunch break at RM field 5. There were a dozen or so guys out there hookin some schoolies. One guy caught my attention when he was bringing his fish all the way back to the dunes right where I was standing. Next thing I know the fish goes into a bag. I explained to him that it was a short. He ignored me and went on to say...now I'm gonna get the rest of them, and walked back to the surf mad.gifmad.gifmad.gif with this yea I'm breaking the law and what are you gonna do about it attitude. I was completely floored by his ignorance. Now I'm not the fish police and I hate to take matters into my own hands...but lets just say the fish was not kept. I've never seen such a blatant disregard for conservation.

Morpheaus is right.

I just received a newsletter from the Marine Resources Advisory Council and in it they state the busts made by ECO around the area. A few from the rocks under the Meadowbrook as well as the rest of the Island. So if they get enough calls, sounds like they might set up some recon to bust guys who do it enough to get caught. Vastly understaffed and probably not going to get better with cut backs etc. All you can do is try or get physical but that's not suggested.

Sadly enough the newsletter also had numerous violations by PB's on the N. Fork, South Shore and Sheap's Bay for filleting short fluke and throwing racks overboard. Desperate times I guess but not a good example. Undersized Porgies for bait made up the rest, almost 100% recs or pinhookers.

Same thing happen today some guy was keeping the fish, putting it inside a bag, when he turn around to fish some good Samaritan swiped the fish and threw it back,he actually thought someone stole it.Next fish JOEYNEXTOY had to put his skate king skills into action and tell the guy "off". Maybe he threaten him with a skate curse.biggrin.gif

I would have done the same. Took the fish and threw it back in the water, while he sat there and watched me do it. Wow like there is not more fish in that sea you go fish in. Damn!!! mad.gifmad.gif

But a beer for your effort in saving a fish to the godsbeers.gifbeers.gif

you gotta get in their face, and tell em they're a cancer on the fishery, and that if you see em in your spot again you'll cut their lines again, and i am NOT talking out my ass, theres a couple members on here who will vouch for me gettin in the face of a poacher

he told me if he was breaking the law, why no police come,

so i told him, cause theres too many of you asshats ,and not enough conservation officers..

this was after one of the guys, asked me if he could have the 15" bass i just caught.

life is short . play hard

View PostSo specifically, what did you do?? I've been in a similiar situation and all I could do was verbally rag on the guy. Did you forcibly take the fish?headscratch.gif

Like most people they plead igorance..but this was a blatant go eff yourself. I really had no other choice...well, I did but I chose not to act on it. Brushfly is right the DEC guys are so understaffed with so much ground to cover.

Keep in mind that in some cases it's all about money. Some people profit on selling these fish....and taking money out of their pockets might really twist them. Frankie is right you never know who your dealing with. Be smart how you confront people.

Thanks for posting the #'s of Dec and police. they are going right in my cell. I think all reading should do the same. I can't stand that *****.

On a lighter note, you had to see the faces on some guys as I released a 42"er a couple weeks ago right next to them. It was very funny. I think they thought I was going to give it to them cause I handed them a blue a few minutes earlier that had had it from trebles.

View Posthere are the better numbers for contacting the DEC..

http://www.dec.ny.gov/about/687.html

find the ones for your area, these are the ones on the streets ,not some dispatcher in albany thats gonna waste your time, something which is not available when trying to nab a poacher.

Thanks for posting that.

The number I gave you was the tips line. Yes it does go to a dispatcher who takes your name number and any info. The dispatcher then calls the local ECO in your area who then calls you to find you.

If you know the ECO who patrols your area and what his shift is then by all means call him. If you don't want to waste an hour calling each number on that list to find out who is around then just call the tip line.

If there is no ECO in your area you may not have any help but if there is, he will be there.
