HatterasJack
First thoughts: Hillary at State? *** Hillary at State? As we've learned with anything regarding the Clintons, one never knows exactly how serious the speculation might be. But let's assume the news -- reported last night by NBC's Andrea Mitchell -- that Hillary Clinton is in the mix as a potential Secretary of State is as serious as it appears. (Because if it's not, and her name is being floated only to be rejected, it's going to make her more upset. But we digress...) The best reason for Obama to be looking for a place in his cabinet for Clinton is simple: to get her out of the Senate. Just ask George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter what it was like to have a once or future presidential rival in the Senate serving as a one-person Roman tribunal. Remember how easily the press gravitated to John McCain in '01 or Bob Kerrey in '93 or Ted Kennedy in '77 to allow them to be one-senator judge/juries on Administration proposals? The upside for Obama putting Clinton at State (or even the Pentagon) is that it gets her out of the Senate and gets her out of the domestic policy debates. Also, one other thing to keep in mind if Clinton does end up at State, she'll be off the political circuit; it's considered unseemly to practice politics while serving in one of the big cabinet posts, especially at State or Defense. So this would mean no more Hillary on the stump for candidates, no more Hillary raising money, no more Hillary collecting chits. Puts a whole different perspective on things really Cause my first gut reaction (need to find out Tim's gut reaction too) is to at the thought of pig in a pants suit representing this great nation as Sec of State "Gradatim Ferociter / Carpe Diem / No Guts, No Glory "I hate taxes, and Communism, and inflation. Now, get to work, and remember that the person who makes decisions around here is ME." Ronald Reagan
Knight771
HJ, Would be a good move on BHO's part to marginalize her but she and Bubba would probably cause a little mischeif out at Foggy Bottom and might even go a little rogue. If he has to fire her that would be very damaging to his future prospects. I would just leave her where she is for now. Good move would be to appoint her to the Supreme Court which would really get her out of everyone's hair (she would replace Stevens or Ginzburg probably, so I wouldn't mind). Don't know if she would take it though.

lichum
Let the circus begin A diplomat is one who goes abroad to lie for their country. Coupling that with Safire's "congenital liar" appellation, it appears Shillary has the " right stuff " to serve as Secretary of State. Better there than on the bench at SCOTUS. "Who is John Galt?" Who? You?
Potomacduck
I'm a conservative and I have no problem with this at all. Obama is going to give that postition to a liberal; that much is evident. If he thinks he can control Hillary, he's got another thing coming. I look for this to be (privately) a very contentious relationship. Obama just got more than he bargained for. Additionally, this takes a very influential liberal out of the U.S. Senate. This is win-win for conservatives.

Potomacduck
Is hillary a moderate Democrat or a Liberal? I've seen her be called both. Hillary is a doctrinaire liberal who is intelligent enough to campaign as more of a moderate. If Hillary is not a liberal then someone moved the measuring stick. fishnmagician
Hillary is more of a corporatist than a lib. that's my impression of her as well.... the GOP spin machine claims she's a communist, the GOP has been spinning so much, that their reality bears little semblence to everyone else's. I think that's why they got swept out of office. you don't inspire confidence when you deny reality. Eggy 10-13 LAA 7-14 50-50 2-

I highly doubt that any elected official who was swept out of office claimed that Hillary was a communist. I know that irrational statements are fun, but, uh, come back down to earth. I know that irrational statements are fun, but, uh, come back down to earth. didn't say they did, I was talking about the talking heads..... the public was unhappy with the GOP and for too long you guys have used spin to twist reality. maybe not ALL the politicians.... however.... the Republicans in Congress have been obstructionist, preventing the Dem leadship from doing anything.... as a result Americans had a negative view of Congress as a whole. the GOP spun that as a rejection of the Dems, since they controlled it. yet any rational person should have seen the writing on the wall.... perhaps if the GOP worked WITH the Dems to push forth the Agenda that Americans wanted, they'd have held on to some seats. fishnmagician
Yeah..........and Hillary isn't a liberal. LOL. you realize there IS a difference between being a Democrat and being liberal? The Clinton's were pretty moderate, but in the decades of vendetta you guys have painted them as communist.... It's the GOP who did so much to prevent Hillary from getting the nomination, and as a result got a more left leaning President. McCain and Bush aren't Conservatives. their failures aren't the failures of conservative policy.... they are neo cons. and I always tried to properly identify them......
