A friend of mine and his wife are lucky to be alive this morning after their house exploded last night from an apparent gas leak. They just had a new propane heater put in. My wife drove by the house this morning and all that is left is the chimney. They somehow got out through the basement garage, but could not escape 2nd and 3rd degree burns. They were flown to Bridgeport Hospital Burn unit, and I plan to head down to see them in a bit.

It is nothing short of a miracle that they lived. They lost the dog and cat. This happened at about 7:00 last night. My brother went over to the house last night around 10 and the neighbors said the three people (my friend, his wife, and a contractor) literally emerged from a ball of fire, only to wander around in total shock until help got there.

Yea, they lost everything...but to think they were literally one step from death...someone was watching over them. Get well Ken, Lori and Mike!

From NBC30 news...

East Granby House Explodes
A home exploded into pieces and shook up the neighborhood in East Granby Thursday night. All that's left standing now from the ranch house at 33 North Road is the chimney.

The homeowners and a contractor were in the basement when the house blew up at about 7 p.m. It became engulfed in flames but, amazingly, the victims are expected to be OK. They were treated at a hospital for second and third degree burns. A friend of the family and said the couple was flown to the burn unit in Bridgeport.

The couple's dog and cat were not as fortunate. They did not survive the blast.
Neighbors told NBC30 that a propane tank had been installed recently at the house but investigators are not saying yet if that was the cause of the explosion.
Investigators were sifting through the rubble Friday morning and were bringing in dogs to assist.
