It's a water-recycling device that will process the crew's urine for communal consumption.

"We did blind taste tests of the water," said NASA's Bob Bagdigian, the system's lead engineer. "Nobody had any strong objections. Other than a faint taste of iodine, it is just as refreshing as any other kind of water."

"I've got some in my fridge," he added. "It tastes fine to me."

Delivery of the $250 million wastewater recycling gear is among the primary goals of NASA's 124th shuttle mission, which is due to launch at 7:55 p.m. EST on Friday (0055 GMT on Saturday) from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

View PostFor some reason drinking my own seems much better than a group sample...how could ya not picture the other person taking a leak as yer drinking it

Actually if you think about it, all the water that you drink now has been recycled by our atmosphere and our planet.

You could be drinking Jessica Alba's sweat, or the Profits puss.

View Postyeah but mother nature and father time put dirt and other good life building things in it.....theys just killing it with iodine up there....it's liquid, but it's dead liquid.

I think it's actually a big ass still.

They call it a purification unit because it's our tax dollars.

Last time I was up there, it was beanbag chairs, lava lamps, loose wimmin, and good weed.

That was a while ago, though.shaky.gif

Much work has been done on sustainable, outer space water systems/sources for long term use. IIRC, Bill Watenberg said it costs $10,000.00 to launch 1 # of payload into space. Since water is so heavy, technology had to be developed to overcome the impracticality of lifting it to orbit. "Refreshing" is not a descriptive I associate w/ recycled urine.

"Who is John Galt?"
Who?
You?

I would hate to have been one of the people who raised their hand to do the taste test. upck.gif

Do you think they told them it was urine? I wonder what the "sample" would taste like from the guy who just had asparagus.
