nightfighter
I got a rottiserie motor set up on my rod lathe. But am having a problem getting an acceptable way of connecting the motor to the rod... ie. I need a chuck that works. Motor will accept 1/4 inch square stock. Any suggestions or pics? I have been messing around with a prototype using the cap from a can of expanding foam, since the rubber cup from the rod wrapper fits over it nicely. Still getting wobble or separation, even with drilled out fender washers..... help.
Ralph78
Try an oversized butt cap and masking tape. Rod Building is an addiction, the N.E.R.B.S. help feed that addiction.
Saltheart
get the 4 prong skewer that came with the rotisserie motor. Cut off the points that runs horizontal (what you would stick in the meat) and you will have 4 prongs at a right angle to the lathe bed. Just use rubber bands wrapped around the 4 prongs and the rod (like lashing it on with rubber bands). Lots of people do this if you just build a few. If you plan on doing a lot of rods , you'll need several dryers. hey are about $60 and sometimes less on sale.
billfishhead
an end cap from a pvc pipe is aturdy enough. drill and tap three thumbscrews  a hose clamp and an inner tub works fo holding the rod too

If the arbor is solid, why not drill and tap it for a small bolt. I like the Flex Coat style chuck, which is a PVC end cap with a slab of thick rubber hose clamped over the open end. You can make them with a chunk of rubber roof, (I have some if you need it) clamped over the pipe cap. You just punch a 1/2" or so hole through it with a piece of copper pipe sharpened on one end. Scrap of wood, hammer, sharp 1/2' pipe (or smaller for teensy rod blanks), square hunk of rubber roof, PVC pipe end cap, hose clamp to fit the O.D. of said end cap, small bolt and split lock washer to attach the end cap to your motor. That is all Proud to be a NERB and I have the shirts to prove it!!
Shadhead
I found a rotisserie motor and didn't get the skewer. So I epoxy'd a two inch piece of key stock into the square skewer arbor on the motor. I had drilled and tapped the end of the key stock for a machine screw. Now I have a threaded end a rotisserie motor that I can add attachments like rod chuck, or plug and fly drier. Â Been that way for years. Always meant to step up. Archie
Thanks canyon and Shad, I will make a chuck from a PVC end cap and rubber (canyon I could use a piece of rubber, I'll PM you to work out details) and Shad I thought of epoxying in a piece of square stock but was afraid that it wouldn't hold, but if you've been using yours for years then it must hold up. Thanks for the advice fellas , Archie "Our skills are no different than those of our ancestors who sniffed and grunted a millennium ago. Wharf Rat
the rubber over the pvc with a hose clamp works well.you will have to replace it over time(it tears after awhile).i use the same thing and you should always tape the rod in for sure from different angles to keep it centered.this will help keep the rod from corkscrewing out of the jig too. i have seen the pvc caps drilled and tapped with thumb screws also that look pretty good, just use the rubber thread protectors and still use masking tape good luck WR
