Rediscovered
Hi all, The other night I was fortunate to be blessed with a very good run of fish. Blues between 8 and 10 lbs with a few bass mixed in to 12 lbs. I had fish just about every cast for almost 3 hours. I was using an 8.5 ft med action lami with my VS-150. Just about every fish was peeling line and fighting hard. My reel is only 2 years old and when I got home it was leaking a brownish greese from the handle and the anti reverse was slipping a 1/2 turn under the weight of a plug. Should I have not of been using this set-up for these fish or did something go wrong? This is the first time this reel seen serious steady action like this. Any diagnosis and what is it going to cost me to get it repaired? It is my favorite set-up and I wanted to continue to use it for the rest of the season before I sent it back to VS for service. Can I cause further damage if I continue to use it? Thanks in advance...
chicky
something went wrong an O ring prob loosened and an oil seals may have busted Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat. Gmofftarki
Go to River's End in Old Saybrook CT. They're a VS-certified service center, and can probably work out the problem in short order. They're really very simple on the inside, all told. daves745t
I know nothing about VSs but if it was in good shape and not abused when you started fishing that night, I don't see why it couldn't and shouldn't have handled that night's worth of fishing. It's not like you took it tuna fishing. Just b/c you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD....(what you do DOES make a difference - be accountable)BigWave Dave
rocket500
Had you had it serviced ever, and how much do you use it? The seals have a finite lifespan and need to be replaced from time to time. VS recommends annually if you use the reel hard.

CHIEF500
Looks like you blew a seal. Nah it's just a little ice cream. I LIKE PIZZA!
staktup
Looks like you blew a seal. Nah it's just a little ice cream. I know that joke! My boss tried telling it at a party one day but he ruined the punchline by saying "Looks like you blew a gasket". Buzz kill. Sorry for the hijack, hope yer reel gets fixed man. OK,, sounds EXACTLY like what went on my 200. If you look closely at the seals there is a metal part that is exposed in the old seals. When the seal goes, water gets in there and rusts the metal a little bit and then you get a little rusty brown seepage.... The water may have got into the anti-reverse and it may need to be repacked but the seals need replacing,,, I took my VS200 to Rivers End Tackle and they fixed it while I waited. For a few bucks I just had them replace the anti-reverse bearing while it was apart so I did not have to worry about it again,,, All total he did the annual service while I waited for $50 and I was fishing the reel that night and I am all set for next year,,,,,,,
David(NH)
You did not over abuse your reel. The seal is toast and needs replacing, so does the anti-reverse bearing. Brown ooze is rust as mentioned already. Water has entered the area and it's wise to replace the anti-reverse bearing as well. If you choose not to, there's a chance that only one or two of the six rollers will engage under the pressures of fighting a good fish and the gear shaft, (being soft metal) will take on dents from the uneven number of needle bearings making contact. This is the point when the main gear and shaft needs to be replaced as well for more reasons than just this. Have it serviced as soon as you can. rocket500
Although the VS reels are sealed, they need maintenance. Those seals do wear out.
BobT
The brown ooze might not be rust, could just be the seawater mixed with and broke down the grease.
