I've noticed a fair number of posts lately about hitting would be thieves over the head, carrying knives "for defense" of person and property, & etc. Guys. The real world is not like TV or the movies. You hit someone and the cops come, you will very likely get arrested regardless of your view of the merits or who "started it." You actually really hurt someone, you can and probably will be subject to criminal and civil prosecution. You kill someone, you better have multiple witnesses that he was coming at you with a gun or knife, or be prepared to do time.

I won't even begin to trot out how much you'll have to pay in attorney's fees to get things cleared up, even if you are in the right.

You can pretty well count on the fact that the law in most jurisdictions generally does not sanction inflicting physical damage to protect property. It cares even less for conflict born of righteous indignation and retaliation--no matter how important these emotions appear to be to all us red blooded fisherman.

Be careful out there, but remember, the punch you throw or the blow you inflict could cost you your house, savings and reputation--except among your fisherman friends perhaps--none of whom will be there to cover your rent.

dont cross the line where thier crime ends and yours begins

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.

I'm in the middle of something like this right now. It is very expensive to defend yourself against something that never happened. All the person needs to do is say you did it and you need to prove you didn't.

You are 100% correct.. but I still don't think I would be able to control myself if I caught someone stealing my pole. If he is brandishing a weapon I would probably press my luck by starting a fight. I had a calcutta 250 that my late grandfather gave to me shortly before he died and it was stolen when salmon fishing in oregon. If I could have caught the scum I doubt I would have thought about the consequences of beating the tar out of him until after the fact. I guess it all depends on the situation. And your overal temperment.
