When ingested by humans, the Atlantic Spadefish, Chaetodipterus Faberis, has been associated with ciguatera poisoning, which is caused by ciguatoxins in the flesh of tropical marine fishes. Ciguatoxins, produced by marine dinoflagellates, grow on algae and are ingested by herbivorous fishes. Larger fish also accumulate the toxin by feeding on smaller herbivorous fishes, and become reservoirs of toxic levels of ciguatoxin. The poisoning can last for several weeks and is diagnosed by signs and symptoms that include gastrointestinal problems, weakness in the arms and legs, and trouble distinguishing between hot and cold.

View PostMy boat? LOL I'm captaining my desk, that's about it wink.gif

They caught it today on the Sea Hawk. Mate sent me the pic asking and I thought it was spadefish, just wanted to confirm it.

Thanks HappyWave.gif

That's what I meant by 'your boat' wink.gif

They are very rare up here, matter of fact that's the first I have ever seen up here, especially this late in the year. They used to be all over the Diamond Shoals tower when I'd fish it with my dad as a kid. Damn things would not eat anything we through at them, then we learned they love cannonball jellyfish. Dice them up on a small hook and they pull like hell!

Is it too much to ask to just breathe, be able to walk and go fishing?

View PostMy dad got ciguatera poisoning from a red snapper before. It almost killed him. He refuses to eat any FL reef fish anymore (ie snapper, grouper, cuda, etc..)

It laid him up for weeks. Crappy thing is he was actually in cuba and the hospital was pretty nasty...

While you can get ciguatera poisoning from most any reef fish, the most likely since you mentioned it, is the 'cuda. They eat all the critters on the reef and their flesh is such that it holds the toxin well.

You can send his snapper and grouper my way smile.gif

A guy I fished with in St. John got ciguatera from a cero mackeral. He said it was the worst experience of his life..half paralyzed. he is still not right, and feels pins and needles. The problem with it is that if you are exposed to just a little of it after getting it bad it can come right back.

"Where is my mind?  Waaaaay out in the water see it swimming?"
