Grassy Sound Bass
All, I am thinking about getting a Van Stall before this Spring. I wanted to know what size Van Stall would be good for plugging with a 9 to 10 foot rod. At some point I would then work on getting a custom rod made for me to match it. Also, what are the advantages of going with a bailless model? Thanks in advance for your help. GSB

EBHarvey
What kind of plugging, what lure weights and line weights, and how much line do you need? "Plugging with a 9 or 10 foot rod" can require any sized reel depending on what you'll be doing - throwing 1/2 oz. soft plastics on 15# line or heaving 6 oz. jigs on 65# line - base the proper reel on that, not the length of the rod. Generally, go with the smallest and lightest reel you can get away with that will hold enough of the line you plan to use. I prefer peace. But if trouble must come, let it come in my time, so that my children can live in peace.

Grassy Sound Bass
I throw mostly 1 to 3 oz plugs and buck tails. I currently use a 9 ft Tica and a Diawa Advantage. I wanted to be able to upgrade to some bigger plugs and some Pencil Poopers so that was thinking with a 10 foot rod. I could not jutify a nice reel like that on a Tica so I would ask for a customer rod as a Christmas present or something down the line from the wife. kermic
I took the plunge last spring and got my first VS- no regrets there! I went with a 150, thought it would fit my lami 8, 9, & 10 footer perfect. I was definitely right with the 8 & 9 footer, however it's mismatched on my gsb1201L(10ft)- even though I use it. I will be upgrading to a 200 sometime in the wayyy future for the 10footer. In most my plugging applications the 9 footer works great- and I'm generally throwing in the 1-3 oz for plugs. I go lighter in the summer with the 8 ft and again the 150 is like butter on the 8 & 9. I can easily get 300 yrds. 30# sufix braid on the 150 with some mono backing so that is a good amount of line capacity, so again just depends if you will be using the 10 ft or 9 ft rod more. I do know some people who use a 200 on a 9ft rod, again it's personal preference at that point. I'd recommend going to a B&T store and trying them on your rods- see how they feel. You can PM me I know a store locally who has some VS in stock.
Grassy Sound Bass
Thanks Kermic, I know of a B/T that has a couple as well up by me. The 200 sounds like the size to go with if I wanted to use it on both size rods. I wish I could afford two sizes, I am just not that wealthy. rocket500
I would definately recommend the 200 if you're going to use it on both 9 and 10 foot rods. Because the 200 is still relatively light (18oz-ish) it balances out pretty well weight-wise on a 9 footer even if physically on the larger side. The 150 is very small on a 10 footer. kermic
It really comes down to preference- some guys like heavier reels on their rods, some like me rather have them a bit lighter. Good luck either way you won't regret it- I couldn't imagine fishing with anything else at this point.
