adkfreeridex
hey all, my father just called and asked me to pick your brains about these rods. he wants to learn to cast conventional, and after reading 'on the water' he wants to start with a 9 footer. is this a good size to start with? also, he has found some good prices on the penn guide series, about 60 bucks for one. i know that for $150+ you could prolly get a better rod, but im not sure if that is smart give he no experience with conventional tackle (only freshwater baitcasting). that said, would this be a good, inexpensive rod to learn with and see if he even likes conventional tackle? also he mentioned a few specific questions that i should ask. first, is (and i think it is by looking at pictures) the male end of the ferrule on the butt section of the rod? he and i dont like rods built the other way. few are, unless you go to walmart, but we saw a few like that, and thought was a stupid design. the second question is, when the rod is separated, are both sections of equal length. he told me he does not prefer his 11'6" st croix rod, because the tip section of it is 8' long (glass) and the butt is 4' (graphite).....reason being its a pain for traveling (he has a pontiac vibe, not a sweet tacoma like me ). perhaps if he likes it one day he would get a 1 piece, but for now, he wants the above criteria met. thanks in advance to anyone who can help bob
The Lure Washer
theyre great rods. The only problem is, is that penn discontinued them. That pisses me off to no extent. The 9 ft is fine to learn on and pair that with an abu 6500 You've got yourself a killer outfit. I do know that the 10fter is a 60/40 split meaning the top half of the rod has all the guides on it. Im not sure about the 9. That may be an issue with transportation. Good Luck! ~Matt BranfordJeff - I'd hit it like a drumset in the special ed classroom. BS4Shore
That would be a nice rod to start with, although I do believe that they are not an even split. Penn has discontinued these rods but keep your eyes on the Star Rod company, they are going to pick up the series and market them. I am not sure what the rod is going to be called. adkfreeridex
thanks for the advice, ill pass it along. he already has the 6500, picked it up at walmart for 20 bucks. it was out of the package sitting in the display case, and there were no bar codes or anything to go by. the guy said name a fair price, and 20 bucks was it. pauley1
9ft Pro Guide is of equal sections. 10ft and on, it's unequal sections. I have the 9ft in spinning. I whale the heck out of it with 4oz and it never broke. Casts very well. It's one of my fav rods. They're still at online stores. Order one or a few before they're gone.
