cjax
Hello All, I wanted to know what is the best paint to use on lead sinkers. I've seen both powder paint, fast drying liquid paint, and even mention of spray paint. I'm not sure what kind of paint would hold up the best in saltwater (wrecks & reefs). Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! cjax

The reason that I ask and I dont mean to be nosy or anything is that sinkers are generally not painted. On the other hand if you are painting jigs/ bucktails whatever i highly recommend vinyl paint. the powder coats chip easy. hope this helps jon "If I could have my wasted days back would I use them to get back on track? STRIPER SWIPER PMB
I use enamels. Hobby paint. I prefer this over standard jig paint, powder paint etc. With powder paint you have to bake it. With the hobby paint there is a greater scope of colors as well, plus it is easy to thin out if necessary. Just always use a base coat of white , black can also be used as your base, but your final color wil be a little darker. For my bucktails I use a nice soft brush, light coats. You can't even see any brush stokes. Good luck. I hear things.....
jdinklage
My experience has been that powder paints hold up very well as long as you bake them after dipping and are my first choice in painting lead.

Metallica
vinyl paint is a paint that contains momomers of vinyl compounds in a solvent when it dries the monomers stick together forming polymers that form a very durable "plastic" coating. the paint is highly chip resistant. i took one of my handmade bucktails and dropped it on a concrete floor. the lead was smashed in but the paint stayed on. it conformed to the deformity. Um if ur here on Long Island several b&t carry them. I'm not shure if im violating rules by naming buinesses but terminal tackle in kings park carries them and so does causeway in wantagh or u can look them up on line. the do-it mold corporation carries them as well. cjax
Why do you want to paint sinkers?? Spigola OK, Call me crazy but I recently went on a TOG fishing trip Nov 3 in RI. Now most people catching the most fish on the boat were using red sinkers and seemed to to do a lot better than those who were not. Of course I'm not saying that was the single contributing factor but it didn't hurt. I know some say that red is the first color to disappear underwater, but at the same time TOG are not line shy as far as I know. So what I'm trying to say is I'm just trying to use what I have seen work a well as what I have learned from experience. Of course technique and where you are fishing from on the wreck has a lot to do with you success as well.

Angler #1
years ago I found that painting the lead weights red and the shank of the hooks red as well when fishing for flounder it did make a difference in the catch Life member M.B.B.A #509 Life member Izaak Walton Fishing Association Life member Cape Cod Canal

Chuck D
I hate to waste anything. When I'm done coating rod guide threads, I brush my left-over Flex Coat onto sinkers. I Flex Coat shoe lace ends and rope ends too. If you are sitting in the man cave and I have left-over epoxy, I'll Flex Coat your butt cheeks together. Greg Fields
I also paint most of mine. Attractor, teaser, boredom, secret weapon, call it what you want, but I just feel better when my sinker is painted then when it is not.... I am not sure it helps, my brother does not use them and catches almost as many as me..................
