angelom
Posted this on other boards - thought maybe someone here would be interested. Much delayed addition to JonS' post (on the kayak site) on the Maine trip. We fished the Penobscot River the first week of Oct. We averaged 20/30 fish per day averaging about 3.5#s. Each caught and weighed several at or over 5#s and a couple at or over 6. Water was a little high due to the aftermath of the hurricane but the pattern stayed the same. Current breaks along the grassy banks and up-stream side of laydowns and the down-stream points of islands where the currents converged. As JonS said, spinnerbaits and 3" storm wildeyes were the baits of choice. On the last day, my brother and I each took several nice ones on mid-running crankbaits. Great fishing, great company, fantastic fall color - the trip couldn't have been much better Reduced: 80% of original size [ 639 x 424 ] - Click to view full image Reduced: 89% of original size [ 573 x 480 ] - Click to view full image Reduced: 96% of original size [ 528 x 432 ] - Click to view full image Reduced: 80% of original size [ 640 x 480 ] - Click to view full image Reduced: 80% of original size [ 640 x 480 ] - Click to view full image Reduced: 80% of original size [ 640 x 480 ] - Click to view full image Reduced: 80% of original size [ 640 x 426 ] - Click to view full image Posts: 118 | Location: downingtown, PA

Bill H
Is that area strictly skinny water? Or can you run boat with a prop motor? Nice smallies, looks like a fantastic trip
Black Cloud
I used to live right on the river in Brewer. The smallmouth fishing there is like no other in the summer I used to catch smallies all day flipping in brush on the bank .I think out of the two years I lived there I got 3 large mouth ,not even nice ones but I did get a 7 lb smallie one day out of a side river. Needless to say that place is a blast good stuff.
Black Cloud
Is that area strictly skinny water? Or can you run boat with a prop motor? Depends on wich section of the river you are on. Down in the Bangor area you can run a boat no problem, once you get up near the hospital you need to be careful the rocks under you are the size of small homes. In that section of the river it is tidal ,another caution! you can be fishing an area of deep water that will be whitecap rapids in a few hrs also cause it is considered tidal you don't need a FW licence below the buoy certain areas of the river are no fishing permitted cause of Atlantic salmon , but you have to get the rules on the fishing and boating cause up there they can be strict and a fishing violation is a day in court. Scubaman
Gents, nice pics. where you able to rent the yaks on the river or did you bring your own? I would like to try the trip sometime myself.
angelom
We took the yaks with us. I think there is a place to rent yaks and/or canoes 1 exit north of Lincoln. The river around Lincoln is pretty skinny water but with caution one could run a prop. You'd have to tilt the motor up in spots and use the trolling motor to get close to the banks and islands.
