pappy
I have a 14ft starcraft sf its a big wide 14fter did lots of research and decided to go with a 25hp honda
mikep53
I would buy a used old 2 stroke. They are cheap and usually have low hours. Do a compression check and run it of course. I have a 14 ft Sea Nymph aluminum with a 1981 Merc 9.9. Runs great. Use it to crab and fluke in the Manasquan river (salt water). Uses 6 gal of gas during the whole summer with some left over. Also have Minn Kota trolling motor to fish lakes and reservoirs.
Parrot6909
Depending on your budget you might be able to get a bigger motor and a 9.9. If you go with the older 2 strokes it might be easier to do. 9.9's around here are great as you can get on some of the reservoir's with them and nothing bigger (unless you get a 15 and slap the 9.9 sticker on it, aka the Round valley special). foulhook
Should I Buy For A 14ft. V-hull Aluminum Boat Used In Ct. River For Fishing? Any Sugestions Would Be Helpful, Thanks. Is this just a plain V-Jon with bench seats or are there wood decks, or a console? The HP will be very different if it has decks, carpet, etc. My father in law has a 14ft Sea Nymph with decks, swivel seats, etc. He has an old 15HP rude on it. It will not get up on plain but does move the boat well here in the Delaware river. Do you intend to use the boat inland any place where there will be a 9.9HP restriction? That would also be a decision factor. Tight lines, Bob "It isn't that Liberals are ignorant. It's just that they know so much that isn't so." mikep53
My Sea Nymph is plain, no decks, just the aluminum bench seats. The 9.9 gets it on plane and does what I need. Its rated for 25 HP and I borrowed a 25 HP for it once. It was too much power, very squirrely.
pappy
never too much power i would rather have reserve power then not enough when i need it
John P
I would stay with a 2 stroke and stay under 15hp. Older Yamaha or Johnson/evinrude. You'll have plenty of get up and go. JP
pappy
I used to own a 13ft sears alum with a 15hp yammi and with two men aboard and all the gear it did ok....on a flat lake. When i used it on the housatonic river and tried to run up river on an outgoing tide it was a dog..we got there but jes dont wait on us. So with these thoughts in mind I will put a 25hp on the starcraft (plus its a bigger, wider boat)

Here is your answer right here if your boat is just open with bench seats. It's been a while since I dealt with the little motors but if I remeber correct this is the one the lightest weight 4 strokes out today. As most know Tohatsu makes all the small outboards for Nissan. This would be a good motor for your boat. Tight lines, Bob "It isn't that Liberals are ignorant. It's just that they know so much that isn't so." foulhook
20" shaft? Good question! I believe that old 1980 something gamefisher had a 15" transom. "It isn't that Liberals are ignorant.
