View PostHow similar or different are they? How easy is it to get parts for the 300? Can the 300 take a dunk? Line capacity on the 300? Thanks ahaed, guys.

The 300 is heavier than a 704. can they take a dunk, maybe a touch better than a 704/6.Line capacity is about the same as a 706 with 20# mono.Fact.specs.say 300 yrds.real life about 275.A big diff.is the 300 has a knob between the handle and housing that applies tension against the handle so it dosnt turn on the cast.I might be wrong in explaining it but I always liked it.I still enjoy using mine at times. Its a strong reel but you have to change the drag washers with the Penn washers. The Penn parts are much easier to get.

View PostSo the Crack can take a bigger beating, but Penns are easier to get parts for? And what was that about chainging drag washers with Penn washers?

I dont know if it can take a bigger beating but it is a strong reel.If the original Crack got wet it lost alot of its drag hence the switch to Penn washers. The Crack has one metal and 1 drag washer.Use the HT100.If you bought it used check tosee if this has been done.

There should be a circle clip holding the drag stack in the spool. Pop out the clip and turn the spool upside down on a table and rap it till they fall out, replace the drags and check the washers, and put it all back together. Pretty easy overall.

The Crack is old technology, the Penns are a little more up to date. With the new braids you don't have to go with a large diameter spool reel. The Crack is a winch, but the 706 is no slouch. Stay away from bails no mater what.

Use a small screwdriver to remove the ring. Also keep your thumb on one side and work the other side up easy.As I said prior, there is only one metal washer and one drag washer.Use the HT100 drag washer which you can buy in most B&TS.Most people have a problem with bail closing when casting and breaking off plugs.I never had that happen when I used my Crack with the bail on,however it was removed.

View PostOk, so now the drag replacing thing is cleared up, which should I get if I had a chance at the 300 for relatively cheap?

Loved my 706's; Loved my Cracks. Both require love and care if you are going to fish them hard. (dunking, sand etc.) Back in the day I had the Crack on a Lami Honey Glass 11' rod and the 706 on a 10' glass rod. Crack would be used more for big water and M etc.

Today, given the ability to get most parts for a 706 a lot easier than for a Crack, I'd opt for the 706. That being said, go for both!!!biggrin.gif
