JoshR
i came accross a good deal on a crack 300.. cosmetically i would say 8 or of 10, and mechanically.. well the current owner still fishes it with no issues.. currently i use a 704z.. now i would not be replacing it.. i was just wondering how they would compare.. is it worth gettng the crack.. maybe giving it a tune up.. and setting up as a situational reel.. or is it a reel that is ready to sit on the shelf? emgred
Get the Crack! They are beasts if you take care of them. As Willie said, they need some small modifacation. XBMX
don't get rid of your 704, the Crack is a few steps up the ladder, especially if you want to snag a boat and pull it in stern first.
MadWader
Question for the Old School.Did the Luxor's or the Crack's ever come in bailess model's ? Or were they customized by their owners ? ……I began to try to explain…that it just wasn't …just wasn't ….what it was...
emgred
Question for the Old School.Did the Luxor's or the Crack's ever come in bailess model's ? Or were they customized by their owners ? Yes and yes. Modification was so simple. Took about five minutes and you did not have to add or buy anything. Bail wire and bail trip were removed. Bail wire fit into the roller so, once removed you were good to go. I do have one that came as a manual pickup out of box. Since I'm in the city right now I can't check for sure, but I think it was the same as a bailed model just shipped with the wire and trip not installed. Hey who you calling Old School!!! empnero
I was actually playing around with my luxor today, the bailess switch literally takes 2 min, maybe 5 to put it back on. The one thing I will say is you can feel the weight more. I do not know why, buy in my hand my luxor (more like a crack 200, i just found out) felt lighter than a 704, but on the rod for some reason, when holding the butt its heavier, only from the butt, not when just lifting it
Striped Bass
If you can buy a 300 in good condition at a good deal buy it and fish it or collect it the choice is yours excellent reel made to fish. The 300 (heavy reel built like a tank) feels different than a 704 at first because of the different design but they are 2 very good reels cant go wrong with neither one of them, and I am sure they will out live me and you put together, cant say that about the new reels of today that barely make it though 1 season. rreelman
I see on your other posts that you are skilled at customizing reels get the Crack then Van Stall it, if the older one remove the bail wire then remove the aluminum plate in the rotor cup,,,take out all the workings for the bail you won't need them anymore then you close up the crescent shaped opening as the main bearing is just under it,,,if fished with the plate left in and the reel takes on water or sand believe me they will get past the plate and into the bearing as I said drill for drainage new Penn washers fresh grease I put a 706 roller on one of mine its the reel Van Stall copied, it was the Montauk reel before Van Stall.....rreelman

MadWader
Would be great to find someone to pick up the old tool and die patterns of the Luxor's and Crack's.Build and sell them for about $350.Wait,there's no money in that.Lets improve them a little and mark them up to maybe $600.O.K. now we can market them. ……I began to try to explain…that it just wasn't …just wasn't ….what it was...
