ask2032
does anyone have any ideas about fishing for sharks from the beach? i have heard of it being done in the carolinas and florida but i have never met anyone who does it on cape cod. i usually fish for stripers on the cape but now i am thinking of trying this. any ideas/tips? After Dark
yes there are sharks. mostly sandbars. i tried once in late july this past summer and got one solid run but missed him. i think i would of got more if i wasnt using old mackerel that was falling off the hook. another guy i talked to that night said he caught a 5 footer the night before. cant wait til next summer. pdevt
i think starting next year it's a no-no aka niko
albacized
i think starting next year it's a no-no Is this just to keep keep them or does it include catch and release? Seems a little extreme to me if it's the ladder - the former doens't bother me since I wouldn't kill any shark I caught anyway.
leaky waders
As of July08, "retention" of brown sharks is illegal. You can still fish for them. You should get the free tagging kit from NOAA if you're going after them. There have been "decent" numbers of them on the south facing cape beaches the past few years. It's low percentage, but they are out there.
capecodder86
I fish the south side beaches in the spring and summer and they are most def there at night with live bait
CcCstriper89
i tried this on multiple occasions this past season in august to no avail. The weeds were horrendous, and the few times i made it out the current seemed to be ripping. I was using 4 oz hurricane sinkers to try and keep bottom and they lasted about 10 minutes before my line was parallel to shore. I think if i have this problem again next year i am going to order some breakaway's i heard they are very good at holding on a sandy bottom. did anyone else try targeting these sharks this past season? It was my first try, and i got the idea from an article that was in On the Water, with Roy Leyva. I would love to hook up with one of these browns or duskys, the fight should be incredible from shore, as a sharks fight from a boat is and your able to chase them down. I will definitely be out there next season, i wasn't planning on retaining one if i caught it this year so the new restrictions on them will not be of any trouble to me. I think i may have not been in the best of spots as well, which i will definately work on as well next season. You'll find during these relatively quiet water periods the current hasn't had time to build up and therefore your better able to hold bottom, even with less weight. The weeds and current would seem to indicate that you were trying to fish in a howling SW wind "…if catching fish is your only objective, you are either new to the game or too narrowly focused on measurable results.” - D. CcCstriper89
thanks Joe G, this has been actually the only time i have ever fished from a beach, I guess I did not realize that the current would be as strong as it was. And yes everytime I went out it was a southwest wind, I think I made sure of that though because when I was looking into shark fishing from shore I had found that a southwest was one of the better winds to fish for them, I cannot say that it was for me though so I will switch it up next season and try to figure out what seems to be the best. Angler #1
on the bottom use a cape hatteress stormweight . Red top and Cape Cod Charlies have them in stock. They are like a pryamid with a drail and generally speaking around here they will hold the best in very strong currents.
