Jersey Lawmakers Ready to Make Teen Driving Safercwm27.gif

For years Jersey lawmakers have been talking about making teen driving safer- this week, they have a chance to actually do something about it.

On Thursday, the Assembly Transportation Committee will consider a package of bills -based on recommendations from the Teen Driver Study Commission.

The legislation would require teen drivers to display an orange hang-tag in their vehicle - to make it easier for police to identify them - it would increase fines for violations committed by teen drivers ,and it would also lengthen suspensions for young drivers - from 3 to 5 months.

Assembly Transportation Committee Chairman John Wisniewski says that's especially important because "for young drivers, the ability to visit friends, go to the store, go to the mall is very important to them, and if they lose that, that's a significant imposition, that's more than a slap on the wrist."

He says the overall goal of the legislation is to "make our young drivers better drivers, by instilling in them lessons that are not being learned ...sometimes, lessons are difficult, and sometimes they're painful, but we would rather have the pain be the pain of not being able to drive, than the pain of life-threatening injuries." headscratch.gif

The legislation also calls for parents to receive an informational brochure that sets forth the special rules that apply to someone with a provisional license, and it would also require that an applicant for a provisional license wait one year after obtaining a learner's permit.

Ok - Our state legislators are off their rockers. What's next? Gray Tags for Seniors?

Green Tags for resident aliens?

Have fun with this one,,,,

I would be supportive of something like this if some of the following were enacted:

-Drivers over 70: Neon Blue Tag

-Road Ragers, mega points on your license, DWI etc, Red Tag

-Teen Driver, Orange Tag

Fair is fair.

Just imagine how happy you would be if you lost everything you have in life and then suddenly got it back

Having been the victim of three young drivers, I wholeheartedly support that measure. When you wake up in the morning and you feel like someone hit you in the back with a baseball bat, get back to me... wink.gif

The Jews would have to wear a big star on their chest too.

My god this state sucks, but the people make me sick sometimes. People ***** and complain about how taxes suck and we are overspending and over-legislating. So when election day comes around, the people elect the same people over and over again. Almost all the incumbents won in NJ last week, and most local elections won on the same level. So how can you expect anything different. People need to stop drinking the water.

Please, Obama, Take Corzine from us!

Pricey doesn't mean better, but cheap is to the bone!

I think this program could work but I also see how it could be abused.

If a cop sees an orange tag car do something technically against the law but usually not worth pulling someone over for, they could pull them over and give them a warning. Basically, call them out on their BS driving and try to get them to change when they're fresh to driving.

On the other hand, cops could start targeting these orange tags because it's a kid and a kid has even less credibility in courts. If the kid decides to fight a ticket, it could be a very easy fight for the cop.

I think the only way to make it work is to watch how many orange tag tickets a cop puts through in a month. If 90% of the drivers he writes up are teenage drivers, then you could deduce that he's targeting young people. Time for a supervisor to go out and see how the officer is operating.

The fact is there are a lot of bad drivers out there and they got set in their ways at a young age so it is a legitimate concern but it could also be abused.

You're talking to the wrong person with that statement. I wholeheartedly support a ban on cellphones in vehicles. People talking on them drive as badly as drunk drivers....
