bill22
can you use a lami 120 1 m rod for bait fishing . if any guys do can you tell me what would be optimal for bait plus weight. like is it a good clam rod for the beach or a good strip bait rod. i know you cant throw big chunks but im trying to see if guys use them or just use this rod for plugging. i seem to throw bait alot and have a st croix so deciding if i want to sell off one for a bait rod
Luds48
I can't give you a detailed response but my buddy bottom fishes with a 2 piece 1201m on his vacation every summer. Unfortunately, I don't know what he is throwing for weight.
I.C. Sines
yes , it is good chunking rod . i throw 8oz. with a bunker head easily with it .. as a matter of fact it's probably the most versatile rod out there . An oceans Striper is tough , mean and strong . Nurtured by the oceans bounty , wits sharpened by the oceans competition , toughened by the swift , endless , tidal currents. pksurfish
I fish 95% bait and sinkers and have and have had MANY Lami rods. The 1201M is aboslutely my favorite, ahead of a number of Ron Arras. It can throw 3-8 oz sinker plus and decent size penant of bait. 5 oz. sinker seems optimal. With 8 oz., would suggest some care, but it works fine with my old guy's off the beach cast; I don't find I have to baby it in any sense. Right reel for it for me is the Penn 704Z and the Van Staal 200. VS 250 works fine too, but I tend to use that more with my 11' rods.
BrianBM
I blink a little at that, too - if fishing bait at all, which I don't do, I'd want the ability to push a lot harder with 8 oz then the 120-1M will allow. OTOH it is an excellent plugging rod, spinning or casting; mine has a 525Mag on it. Not a standard setter for distance casts, but it lends itself to an easy, smooth cast that reduces backlashes with braid. (I still set the brake for the maximum that the reel allows.) I.C. Sines
i think bill22 wants to know if you can also throw bait with that rod besides plugging with . if that is the question then the answer is yes . i don't believe he's looking at that as a chunking rod solely . common sense would tell you that a 132 1M or an mh rod , or any number of other rods would be better as a bait outfit . bill22
thanks guys i do want it as a possible bait rod if nothing going on plugging. i just didnt know the limits and figured i would ask. i didnt want to break a custom lami doing something dumb by throwing big weight . Yes, it will work for this. 4-5 ounces with clams or a smallish bunker chunk work fine. 6 ounces plus a chunk on mine (built conventional) and it starts to become a lob cast..
