kelkay
I see some recipes call for dark water dubbing. I do not have that, or know what it is. I am going to use SLF dubbing and hope that works. I also see that some of the dubbing seems to have sparkle, and maybe holographic material. I have never seen this in local stores. Does anyone know more about this?
kelkay
Holographic Gold Diamond Dubbing is what someone called for, or you could use Angora goat, or rabbit. I see lite bright...but not that particular dubbing yet. I will search for it. I need a long dubbing, somewhat coarse, that sparkles.
M. saxatilis
...I am going to use SLF dubbing and hope that works. Kelkay, I am not familiar with the dubbing products mentioned - dark water dubbing - I have used Angora, rabbit and lite brite. Again, I am not familiar with the pattern you are tying but I believe that a SLF dubbing of comparable color will work just fine. Here is a picture of some SLF dubbing I use. It is marketed as "SLF Standard II" colors from left to right, top to bottom are: Fl. red, Crimson, Fl. Orange, Hot Orange, Fiery REd, Fiery Orange, Fiery Claret, Purple, Highlander Green, Insect Green, Yellow, Fl. Pink. All of these colors may be purchased individually as well. Hope this helped. kelkay
Your SLF is much more bright than mine, and it is more sparkly too. I think for this the colors I have for the leech are good, (more natural) but they need to be a tad bit longer, and a touch more sparkle. I wondered how Lite Bright would be...I finally found where they sell it. I have seen recipes calling for it, but never knew where to purchase it. Thanks for your reply! kelkay
Luckily I came across a holographic ice dub, and that helped the look of the burnt orange flies.
M. saxatilis
Kelkay, Nice looking ties. Seeing those patterns reminds me of a leech pattern I use for winter steelhead here in AK. I'll post a picture when I can but instead of dubbing for body I use Estaz or Polar Chenille with a turn or two of a hackle palmered just behind the barbell eyes. Tips should extend to hook point A hackle of the same general color of the Estaz gives the illusion of long body dub. Thanks for sharing your ties! Life is too precious to fish ugly flies. kelkay
I think what you are talking about is a Schminnow, and I just made those too....they are very easy and cool looking to do.
