Surf Hunter
Ok, so with Shannon and I getting our new yaks the first of the year we had to figure out a way to mount them on top of my Jeep. My Jeep has a soft top so we purchased the rack below. It has 1.5" diameter tubes. I won't be using the trays for the kayaks BTW. What should we get to be able to mount two kayaks (X-13's) to the top? I can't afford the hullivator style as we are pretty much spending all we have on the yaks, safety equipment and rigging them. All thoughts would be great. Tom Be the chimp, not the frog.....

Do you think two will sit side by side? I need to get the rack installed this weekend so I can measure. Be the chimp, not the frog.....
kross57
What he said. Get rack pads like these: They come in all sizes to fit both round and square bars. As far as the rack being wide enough, you will have to measure.
Matt Z
should fit side by side. Unless you have really wide kayaks, even then, you should be fine.
126andy
Use those noodles they use for swimming pools. they work fine. My short-term memory is not as sharp as it used to be. Benny Raw
Depending on the weight of your yaks and the shape your in you may want to think about a roller system. Lifting my loaded yak onto my Wrangler got old quick. If you'll always have a partner it shouldn't be an issue, but it's something to consider. PM Casting
because of the rather short roof you may want to use a third rack in the rear. I have a small SUV and I felt the roof racks were too close together so I rigged up a third bar to even out the load. When I load my yak I just lift the bow onto the rear rack and slide it forward. tpoliti
If the Jeep isn't wide enough for 2 yaks side by side you might have to get the "J" style rack from Thule.
carl4x4
I fit two yaks on the roof of my Wrangler. A Hobie Adventure at about 28" wide, and a Malibu X-factor 34" wide. I have a similar rack, but I also have a set of Thule bars on it with a roller in the back for ease of loading, and un loading. Which makes it a bit wider, and hunter rod valts on either side of the cargo rack so they don't take any space from the rack.
KOC
I would use the covering that is used pipes in houses they are alot less expensive than the rack pads also they are already cut down the side to easily slide on. Ditch Troll
malibuX
Ditto on the pipe foam insulation tubes. They're a lot cheaper because they don't have the name of an expensive company on them. "Not all who wander are lost..."
Surf Hunter
Thanks all! From first glance, looks like we will need one "J" type holder for one yak and probably just go with the foam "V" blocks for the other due to width restrictions. Thanks for the input!
