sc537
Did you see the thread by Allan Hawk on the Main Forum,"Penn Sargus 8000 The Review".Not too many people on this site have any faith in the Penn reels anymore so you may not get many replies. But Allan Hawk gives a good report. Morpheus78
I just bought the Penn Sargus SG6000 for my 10' plugging rod. I have 30lb Power Pro on it. I havent used it much as of yet, but so far, it is probably one of the smoothest reels I have ever owned. Check out the review in the Main forum as previously stated...its very insightful. So far...its braid friendly, BUT... manually close the bail! I didnt get ANY knots on cast alone, but when closing the bail with the handle, I would get a loop once in a while which if I didnt get out... would cause a knot on the next cast. Manually closing the bail eliminated this problem. The drag is smooth and powerful and the metal frame is awesome. I personally like the reel. It was this or a Shimano Spheros, which everyone recommends. I got such a good deal on the Sargus that I grabbed it, and so far, im not disappointed. stripersurfguyny
I used one briefly... Very smoothe. I however had problems with the bail spring. and it snapped many lures on me. Had it happen to others too. Decided to sell it and get a 704z.. I've never looked back but the rest of the reel was fine... just not my cup of tea
RyanAlaska1990
i just picked up the sargus 7000. with 40lb PP braid. by far one of the smoothest reels i have owned. i manuall close every bail no matter what reel it is so i have noticed the looping problem. thge only problem i have had is ther bail slammed shut on me twice last night. first i thought i didnt lock it open so i was carful the next time and it happend agian. but i used it all day with no problems so who knows. the reel also have a hell of a drag. should handel just about and fish you can find in the surrf -Ryan

basslander
I purchased one for my wife this year. It's matched to a 10' St. Croix. She used it all season, caught a bunch a fish on it. The real was super smooth. Until we spent 4 days in Montauk this fall and she dunked it several times. Then it started to bind. It binds a bit after not being used but gets better after the first cast. It was usually rinsed every day but some salt obviously got in. I was a bit surprised as this is a brand new reel and I have fished Penn exclusively for years, frequently dunking them and never had one bind this easily. I am sure it will be resolved after it is serviced. I'll pack it with grease this winter which will hopefully prevent the same from happening next year. So if you think the real might be dunked, treat it very well or maybe think about a little better model. Ty Canyondiver, what's your secret? FreshConvert
Its a good reel for the money... I have one that I fished for a season. Worked great even after multiple dunkings. The only reason I do not use it as much is I have since purchased a VS. I usually recommend this reel to people just getting started. Alan's review also gave me some confidence after reading how it is put together. The netal body makes a big difference when fighting a fish.
