SO I've drowned bait in the surf for a long time (in jersey), but just recently got into plugging... IM ADDICTED!! biggrin.gif

Here is what I've got now (some bought, most given) Anything I'm desparetly missing? (Besides a clambrella)cwm13.gif

* I noticed you can get plugs in different lengths and weights.. are the weight differences just for casting?? Length differences for different (sized) fish?

* Also I have been tieing the plugs directly to my line, without any leader or swivel... just a clinch knot to the plug (except for the popper with the wire leader). Its pretty time consuming to switch plugs, is there a faster way? ...If I used a snap swivel.. it would mess up the movement of the plug right?

* Should I be using a leader material? (I've got 25lb mono spooled now)

Anyways.. I did search and came accross the How to .... thread and there was some great info in there but I did still have some questions... thanks for all your help in advance! beers.gif

I fish with a snap swivel. just tie a Polamar to the swivel and you are good to go. Changng plugs takes 10 seconds. Don't use a leader personally.

Looks like you have the basics. May want to get a few more dark plugs for nighttime. a cheap black or blurple bomber would fill in nicely as your night-time swimmer.

Interesting... I feel that leaders are always good to use..... about 4 or 5 feet of Fluorocarbon tied to a snap swivel on one end and a uni knot directly to the line......... dropper loop about 3 ft from the snap swivel with a teaser.. wink.gif

Yea with the teasers I've been tying I have been considering moving over to using a leader.

View Postwhat kinda teasers are you guys using?

a regular fly or a soft plastic like Berkeley gulp or small slug go will do just fine...... I noticed if you use the gulp as a teaser it leaves a scent trail and the large plug will be in the strike zone automatically.... give it a shot wink.gif

View PostBraid, so tying a dropper knot may be a bit tricky :p

yeah man definitely go with a leader..... If you are ever in the position where you have to grab the line to get the fish in you dont want to put your hand directly on braid...... Fluorocarbon will give you an extra advantage because its almost invisible underwater.... go with Seaguar

Sicrado -

You may want to flesh out your collection of tins. Some Hopkins, Kastmasters, Pt. Jude's, etc.

Your diamond jig #8 doesn't have any real action but the Swedish Pimple #7 is OK.

Try to stick with single rear hooks when possible... it'll make life simpler when unhooking fish (like on your #4)

Additional lures to consider:

Pencil poppers

Little neck/Polaris poppers

Needlefish

Danny plugs

Bucktails

You are silent about your rod/reel combination other than 25# mono which sounds on the heavy side. cwm13.gif

headscratch.gif It makes difficult any suggestions ie: a 2 1/2 - 3 oz lure if your combo will only handles 3/4 - 1 1/2 oz lures.

Keep pluggin'

thanks for the input guys.. !

right now my surf rod is a 9' okuma solaris which is rated 1-4 oz. My reel is a penn spinfisher 8500ss which is filled with 25lb mono...which i swapped from my bait rod.

would you recommend swapping for a single rear hook (with a bucktail) on all my plugs?

I know and have used this sites online store, i had to spend 40 dollars credit from 3rd place in last years march madness pool... (thats how i found out about it lol) its just difficult for me to browse through everything and determine what i need, as compared to what i have.
