NIce gift from a good friend.

Yes a 10 wt is plenty for stripers, even big ones. Mostly to cast larger flies. If you don't know how to cast, find someone to teach you. If you have to pay, it's worth it. (don't ask me how I know.)

I also use a seven weight for smaller waters like rivers, estuaries, ect for smaller flies. Great for those small crazy blues too.

Start with a floating line, Nice to have extra spools for various sinking lines. Don't practice on the driveway, it will ruin the line. Use the grass.

Lots of good help on this forum. Good luck!!

Also be careful, first striper on a fly line is no different then your first hit on the Crack pipe! cwm13.gif you will be addicted!!!!

Yeah a couple of years ago when I started fly rodding, I swear someone threw a rock and hit me in the back of the head. lol it was the result of a right to left wind. My back cast was getting pushed directly in back of me. lol

Youv'e got all winter to practice for the spring!!

Many reels can be used in salt water, but only a relative few are specifically made to take regular punsihment in salt and the demands that larger saltwater fish can put on drag systems. Ultimately, you will find that, as in most things, you will get what you pay for. I have had good luck with Old Florida and Nautilus reels, but that's just me.

All reels used in salt demand TLC and fresh water baths after every use. That goes triple for reels used around sand. Or they go south very very quickly.

Bayside, Learning to cast correctly will take some of the work off your arm. You may want to play with the 7 weight to start, it's a little less effort. FLy fishing is like golf a lot of it is simple technique and once you understand the technique it is much easier. If you know anyone that is a good fly fisherman work with them to learn the casting stroke.

Arty,

I would agree with this!

Also, for a reel, the Old Florida is a good bargain, and also the Colton reels are a great buy and a very good reel.

When I get a little more scratch together, I will be getting two more of the Colton II reels.

I have a Joan Wulff casting DVD I would be willing to lend you, and you can lawn cast as you break down each concept she discusses.

Also, Ed Joworowsky is a great teacher and writer.

I read his book, went outside and added 30' to my cast in a few minutes.

It will come back tenfold if you get a few lessons from a really good teacher. Starting out without any bad habits will be your savioricon14.gif

Arty,

That reel will be trouble in the salt, and the pillar design really isn't conducive to ruggedness or higher drag pressures.

Stick to conventional designs for now, and if you want to get into collecting/messing with cool stuff, get into it after you have stuff that will kick some butt.
