Karzai 'demands' Obama end civilian deaths

Source: USA Today

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -

Afghan President Hamid Karzai made an immediate demand of

Barack Obama on Wednesday, saying the president-elect must

prevent civilian casualties as Afghan villagers alleged that airstrikes

killed or wounded dozens of women and children in a wedding party.

No Afghan officials could immediately confirm the number of alleged

casualties, but Karzai referred to the incident at a news conference

held to congratulate Obama on his U.S. presidential election victory.

Karzai said he hopes the election will "bring peace to Afghanistan,

life to Afghanistan and prosperity to the Afghan people and the rest

of the world." He applauded America for its "courage" in electing Obama.

But he also used the occasion to immediately press Obama to find a way

to prevent civilians casualties in operations by foreign forces. He then said

airstrikes had caused deaths in the Shah Wali Kot district of Kandahar province.

"Our demand is that there will be no civilian casualties in Afghanistan.

We cannot win the fight against terrorism with airstrikes," Karzai said.

"This is my first demand of the new president of the United States -

to put an end to civilian casualties."

Double edged sword.

Karzai needs to pull up his pants and stop the corruption of the government.

The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Our demand is that there will be no civilian casualties in Afghanistan.

That's a pretty tough order to fill since the enemy is an irregular force which is infiltrated into his countries security apparatus and many "civilians" tolerate if not actively assist the Taliban/Al Queda forces.

WASHINGTON (AP) - A deadly attack on a U.S. outpost in eastern Afghanistan in July was executed with the support of some local police and government leaders as well as villagers there, according to an internal military report.

The report, released Tuesday, recommended the district's Afghan police chief and governor be replaced, if not arrested and tried for committing crimes against the government. And it said the incident underscores repeated problems in the volatile mountain region with the local population offering "passive and active support" to the enemy, which also has infiltrated the country's security forces.

Nine U.S. troops were killed in the attack, which was launched just before midnight on July 12 by about 200 insurgents. Another 27 U.S. troops were wounded, and of those, 11 were treated and then returned to duty. Between 21 and 52 enemy fighters were killed, and another 45 wounded, the report said.
