has anyone used those japanese-only long-casting reels on the canal yet? either the shimano pa spin power, or daiwa basia? i'd love to buy one of these, because they look so sexy and cool, but i don't know how well they do with our style of fishing.

I don't think that the Basia or the Powersurf are all that big an improvement over the Emblem Pro to warrant the extra $$$. Plus, they're on the slow side for plugging.

had a Basia in my hand the other day, very similair to the surf in size and weight.

What intrigues me is the spool, it is much longer than the surf spool and there is nothing to the inside of it.

Take the spool off your spinning reel and flip it over, it is skirted up to around the bottom of where the line is spooled on.

The Basia spool is like a cup with a hole drilled in the bottom for the shaft to go through, nothing inside there.

Not knowing much about much but I have been thinking, this may put alot of pressure on the shaft if the shaft is fully extended with the line coming off of the front (or top) of that elongated spool with a big fish on or more likely hung up on the bottom.

i've never used an emblem pro but i love my powersurf...the 4:1 gear ratio is better suited for jiggin, but it works well for plugs too...the one thing i learned this year is if a fish breaks 20 yards to the side of your 80 yard cast, just ignore it, because you'll need tommy john surgery trying to buzz that plug back in to recast...redface.gif

View PostI heard that the drag on the Basia is almost non-existent, probably not a good idea for the canal.

They are made for competition, not 40lb linesiders in running current.

my powersurf has 33 lbs of drag, pretty sure the basia does as well...there are some jdm daiwa competition spinners that don't have drags, but thats not one of them...

The Powersurf strikes me as an Emblem Pro with slower gears, a stronger handle and the QD feature.

The biggest difference is that Diawa-US warranty centers won't repair a Powersurf under warranty. Or any other JDM-only model.

Wonder if you could swap the powersurf gears for emblem pro gears to increase the gear ratio? That way you would have a metal bodied high retrieve long cast reel! It seems like the emcast, emblems, powersurfs, etc. are all built along from alot of the same moldswrong....kinda like alot of the shimanos..though I could be
