Hey all, new to the site and had a question.

i fish a vs 250 model 0166 right hand retreieve, as im finishing up my third season with the reel i have expirienced some minor drag slipage from time to time. Today i hooked one of my first true cows while bucktalin a local spot, she turned and buzzed line off the spool like a tuna and just as my line took off so did my drag knob. right into the water went my drag knob and off came my spool at the hands of one of my biggest fish ever hooked. i recovered the spool but the knob was gone and so was the fish.

the reel is being serviced through the rep doug, should have it back in a day or two however he mentioned doing some work on the spool to prevent this problem again. has anyone herd of such problems on the older model vs and if so what's the fix?

Just kidding, I shouldn't hijack. Hope someone can answer your question.

FWIW, my much less expensive Penn greenies get splashed like crazy take an occasional dunk and have been used for years without a hitch. Infact that's how today went. oooops, I said it, sorry. redface.gif

Why do people have to make a joke at someone expense... Surfguy had a good question and hatman hijacks the thread about his " less expensive penn reel".. No need to rub peoples faces in the mud.

And surfguy is a new member feel for the person....Not make fun of him..

I have an older 200. I know if you take the washers out and re-instal them improperly that the drag will tightened down on it's own as line is taken out. Maybe it's possible to go the other way as well.

Except when the bail springs break, except when the a/r fails, except when you strip the gears using braid, and on and on...

Have yet to have those happen on a few 704's and a 710 I've been using for years. Use fireline instead of braid. Most guys can fix them if necessary in their truck. wink.gif Wanted to end the hijack but ya prodded me.

I guess what makes me even bring things like this up is because I have toyed with the idea over the years of trying a VS yet when I look at the prices along with the service fees and then numerous threads about "issues" I have to remember how good some other cheaper alternatives are. Yeah, I know, I can't swim with the other reels. OK.

I actually feel bad for guys like SurfGuy85 who lay out that much coin and after 3 years has the thing malfunction resulting in additional costs as well as a nice fish lost. I feel for the guy.

quit being a d-bag, the guy asked about a van staal malfunction, nowhere in his post did he as anyone if it ever happened to their greenies, or z series penns. i've got greenies, and z series penn's, and prefer my "horrible" ss series penns, so there, you're wrong and i'm right, my reels are better. i feel bad you fish with those old heavy ugly things.
