fishnmagician
to reclaim the GOP.... I think it's pretty clear that if the GOP didn't kowtow to the radical Christianist sect, and allowed McCain to make a quality pick for a running mate, odds are good McCain would have won handily today. McCain/Romney would be winning tonight, but alas Palin was shoved down the throats of true conservatives, by the Bedrock variety. I hope four years from now we see the GOP put forth a REAL conservative ticket. Eggy 10-13 LAA 7-14 50-50 2-
The Dude
I hope four years from now we see the GOP put forth a REAL conservative ticket. That's my ultimate hop for US politics. However, the Team Republicans represent a HUGE roadblock in achieving this.
Ditch Jigger
Actually, I think that the economy would have been an insurmountable obstacle for McCain no matter who his VP choice was---but it might have come down to the wire. I honestly think Obama wins by 10 points in the popular vote, with an EC margain right around that of Clinton/Dole. Walter Sobchak
I'm w/ DJ on his first point. But, FnM, if the conservatives had the GOP you wouldn't have McCain as the nom. laisser nous faire

fishnmagician
A liberal wanting to see conservatives on the GOP ticket Nice try funny ain't it. I bet there are MORE liberals who want a conservative on the ticket than there are REPUBLICANS who desire the same. Walter Sobchak
all the more reason to take it back. seriously, enough of the Christianist and Rovian hate cabal. find old time conservative principles and run on them. If Roe v. Wade were ever reversed and the abortion issue was sent back to the people in the states it would set the national GOP back - way back. But there is another problem, in 4 years you will have had 12 years of pushing more and more tax burden on the high income earners and less and less on everyone else. Going to be tough to scale that back - I hope it happens but it's going to be a big problem. I assume we'll have more entitlements and even larger shortfalls on the current entitlements. You're going to have to have someone run who says the fix is not going to be easy (unlike Bush and Obama). Then you need people to accept it. laisser nous faire
John Purser
Good luck with that. I'm thinking there aren't many of Eisenhower's old buddies still around to make that happen. The GOP belongs to the religious nuts and neo-cons. Chuckles
Remember what happened in GB when Blair tossed out the conservatives... they thought they could re-tool their party and haven't sent a decent candidate up for PM since. I predict the GOP will continue it's plunge into the abyss because there are idiots out there who actually think people like Palin are the future of the party. Which is absolutely
Roadrunner
Yeah. Republicans should go out of their way to take advice from their rabid, political enemies as to how to 'improve' the Party. That's like heeding the call of the burglars union to leave cars and houses unlocked with valuables in plain view. Total insanity. Mudpro
Take this for whatever it is worth, but it is honestly given by a Democrat who use to be a Republican. People like me are: All for being fiscally responsible, but not socially bankrupt. Bring back the concept of "Compassionate Conservatism". All for marriage being between a man and a women, but recognize that a significant percentage of the human race is homosexual, and they have rights. they should be able to have all the same legal rights between a couple as a married couple does. All for providing a strong military and waging war on terrorist; but don't preach safeguarding our nation while at the same time leaving our borders wide open so that the rich can get richer by exploit cheap illegal labor. All for protecting and promoting family values; but recognize that I may not want my kid believing in fairy tales that were metafors designed to teach important values instead of real science. All for conservative values, but believe there are also value in some liberal ideas. So stop using the word liberal like its means something bad. If you expect my support, then listen and debate my ideas intelligently. In other words, if the GOP wants to rebuild itself, then it needs to earn our support. For the last 8 years its held onto power by lying, cheating, and making Americans fear and even hate one another.
