JoshR
So i have been doing some research and see that fireline is the line of choice on the older penn reels.. I will be giving my reel a refresh over the winter and would be putting new line on. This setup would be used for mostly plug, tin and bucktail fishing.. mostly south shore.. some Montauk, Shinnecock, Robert Moses.. What pound test Fireline should i look to get.. also.. what equivelent thickness in mono would that be? JoshR
surfcollector
I have no idea what your turf looks like since I' a little to the left of you....but I generally run 30 lb (equivalent of about 15 mono) on the larger reels like the 704/6 and VS 200. 20 lb, equivalent to 10 on my vs150. 14 lb fireline equivanent to 6-8 lb mono on my vs100. In your case, i'd just load a bunch of 30 onto a little mono backing depenidng how full you like your reel.

sc537
20-30#,I have 30# on my 706 and VS250.If I spooled up a 704 I would use 20# only because I have 30#.My choice for you would be 30#,next reel maybe 20.

Stoker1
30# fireline on my 704z, with a 20# mono backing. I'll second this. If all the fish you dreamed of came into your creel by wishing, why think of all the joy you would miss then, there'd be no more fun in fishing. ex-bunker dunker
how about trying the 14# on your 704z, its thinner in diameter and more than strong enough, plus it'll allow your lures to go deeper. life is short . play hard
stakones
Personally I like the thickness of the 30lb plus in rocky areas it will give you some more abbrassion resistance.

derangler
I don't have a penn, but I made the switch from 20#mono to 30# fireline this season and I am very happy with it. Nice improvement in casting distance and sensitivity, no knot problems at all. Fish the edges.
