Esau
I just got a 706Z, and most trial casts were good, but on three casts the roller caught the line. I positioned the spool as far out as possible before casting, but the rotor moved on almost every cast, and I believe that is why the roller caught the line a few times. I did have the ant-reverse on. I suspect operator error. What is the correct casting technique for manual (no bail) pick up spinning reels? I also tried positioning the handle at different places to stop rotor movement. Thanks.
Sudsy
Place all four fingers in front of the reel stem when you cast This'll hold the line out and away from the roller Be sure to position the spool all the way out (which you're already doing) I just wanta play everyday despite small nagging injuries -- and go home to a woman who appreciates how full of crap I truly am. ~ Crash Davis Social Distancing since 1962
ex-Googan
Wouldn't hurt to position the roller down (away from rod) either.
Esau
Thanks, folks. I did position the roller down and away from the rod, but the rotor wants to rotate during the cast, even with the anti-reverse on, and that moves the roller away from the down and away position. I have not yet tried the the 4 fingers in front of the reel stem. Thanks again.
NIGHT STRIKES
I recently got a great tip when I was asking about packing a 706 with grease for a trip to "M" , it was the fact that by packing the inside with grease limited just how much the rotor would turn or move on each cast and sure enough its no problem now.. Other then that you just have to be careful and aware on every cast that you make...
Esau
Night Strikes, that makes sense. I also read that it takes a fair amount of force to turn the handle on Van Staals, probably by design to keep the rotor from turning during a cast. Thanks. Just last week I made my 710 greenie manual by cutting the bail wire. Today was it's trial run. Fished all morning and caught fish without any hangups. Always casted with the pickup to the left. I guess the packed grease helped. on the good side of the grass.....

Flashman
roller up.. handle back and dont pack with grease. OR, just go to zee baas like me. Packing grease seems to be ok until the cold weather sets in..... Dont understand the 4 finger thing sudsy, you may be holding the reel upside down? 706's are spinning reels not conventional reels sudsy. NIB
The 706 should set up so the spool is up and the roller away from you or opposite the rod..In addition to this the handle should be in the down position..If it does not set up this way, go to the hardware store and pick up stainless or teflon washers to match the one in the handle to fine tune the possition of the handle. It does not take much.. The handle in the up position is more than likely your problem. If the handle is up, when you cast the force of the cast makes the handle spin down, spinning the rotor and picking up the line in the process. Sounds like it might be a PITA but in time it becomes second nature..With the reel set up right all you have to do is spin the handle down on every cast.. If the reel is New there is a good chance there is only a very small amount of grease in it.You should take the sideplate off to inspect this. Maybe also adding a small amount of grease. If necessary, this will help to tighten it up a bit.... Good Luck.. Build a Better Mantrapand the Rats will beat a path to your Door..
Sparky
I fished a reel with a bail for the first time in months the other night. I found myself grabbing the line with my index finger every time. Second nature it is. btw - no wind knots on a reel that drives me crazy with braid. Toad in Nj
would a dog that has crapped the bed also make this a bigger issue then usual?
NIB
would a dog that has crapped the bed also make this a bigger issue then usual? Being as the dog is your anti-reverse it is just about impossible to fish with one that has crapped the bed.You would have bigger issues to deal with.. Unless your talking abot a canine MILB. In that case, you would also have some pretty big issues.. Build a Better Mantrapand the Rats will beat a path to your Door..
