stryperStalker
I'm heading down to the eastern shore of VA for Thanksgiving. We'll be in Parksley. My uncle has a boat, but I'd like to do some shore fishing. Will the stripers and blues be biting that week? Better to fish the Chesapeake bay side, or the coast? Looking at it on google maps, it looks like a lot of the water is hard to access on foot. Any general areas (towns) would be appreciated. It looks like Wallops Island is the closest area. bad red
assateague in va. is your best bet ,just go to chincotaeague and check with Capt. Steves ,you can walk over or buy a permit to drive on the o.s.v. blues and stripers should be there. boat fish out of wachapreague or at kiptopeke for stripers. Also a nice pier at kiptopeke some fee involved.
stryperStalker
Thanks for the info. I'm driving down from BWI, so I'll try to stop in at either Capt. Steve's to get a saltwater permit (you need one, correct?) and find out what's been going on. Has anyone been to SherryJo's B&T off of 13? Not sure if they sell permits either. I go right by it on my way down, whereas Steve's is a bit of out of the way. Thanks
icatchbigone
No license required if you fish the Natl Park at Assateague, but I think you can get one online at the Virginia Marine Resources Commission website, google it. I get mine there but I'm a resident. Check it out. I've not heard of that B&T but I mostly fish in Maryland anyway. Rick in ESVA
Reelangler
Captain Steve's is a good shop with very helpful staff and they usually have fresh bait. When you cross over the drawbridge, take a left at the light and then a right on Maddox Blvd. and you will find Capt. Steves on the left after a couple of stoplights. Watch the speed limit on Chincoteague Island. The whole island is 25 mph and the police are out there! Good luck, the bass should be there in full force by then. Reelangler
Most of you in New England throw plugs in the surf. You will find we mostly bait fish down here and the bait of choice is bunker (menhadden), chunks and heads. I'm not saying not to throw artificials but it is not practiced as much down here on our beaches. Let us know how you do. Rob

I'll bring some setups for bait fishing, though. When in Rome...
Reelangler
Don't be discouraged though. I am getting into plugs more and more. It doesn't hurt to try while the bait is soaking. I actually hooked up with a bass last fall with a floating swimmer. (Lost it 5 yds from my rod tip.) You never know.........
rob snowhite
i'm heading out there with some friends the weekend before they surf cast, i want to fly fish from my kayak what chance will i have to get into some false albacore? i figure i'd go out into the backwaters solo with the kayak or just fish off the shore out of their casting range
Reelangler
Honestly, you are not likely to get an albie from shore or anywhere in a yac. on the Eastern Shore. If they were in the area, you could get them a few miles out in the ocean. You could do well fishing for shad, stripers and bluefish from a yak. Tell us how you do. Yaking does intrigue me. fishinchip
You can go to Ann's Cove or Guard Shore both are close to Parksley. You should be able to pound the shoreline in these areas and catch plenty of schoolies. Use 1/4 or 3/8 jigs with Fin s fish or something similar and have a blast. newsjeff
If you have a yak, I can let you onto a spot that's a very, very easy paddle. And it's a place where 40lb+ bass are not uncommon. Fool me once, shame on you...fool me twice - you go eff yourself. -Billy
stryperStalker
Got all the way down there only to find out that my dad didn't have room for our fishing equipment. Talked with a family friend who said they had been catching plenty of shorts lately, but he had been mostly "horndoggin" for spiny dogfish. What is the migration pattern of stripers (rockfish) in that area? Will they stay through the winter and then head back up the coast in the spring?
