mitchman
I live on cape cod and need to get a reel for cod. I plan to fish mostly on head boats (helen h in hyannis) and friends boats. Which Avet would be most suited for droppnig both bait and jigs on cod in deep water? The LX/JX series or the HX/HXJ. Would the two speed be of use? The higher gear for rebaiting and the lower gear for fighting? I also would like to take it for tuna (rippin jigs). thx.

lbifly
which ever avet you get they are all good. i have the sx and it will woop anyfish that i catch. But i would go with the 2 speed and pick a model with a large capacity of line. fly fisherman can buy his way around the world to find any game fish, but he always has to cover the last 50 feet on his own..... FishNH
Are all the Avets still lever drags? I tried one once for cod jigging and its a pain to keep ingage and disingage the lever drag system trying to keep in close contact with the bottom. A few other guys I know felt the same way with any kind of lever drag reel. The Daiwa Saltiga or slatist is a great reel for cod jigging.

Chris N
Next size up from the SX should be more than enough imho. Personally, I use the SX myself for codfishing. Given the choice though specifically for cod, I would go with a sllightly larger model just for the line capacity. fearisyouronlygod.
Wayne Tj
The MX two speed is more than enough for jut cod, but his requirement was also to have a reel for tuna - the LX two speed fits the role. I use them myself for the same two applications. As far as the lever drag being a pain in the arse for jigging cod - any reel other than an electric reel is work. Bait fishing for cod makes no difference what type of drag engagement mechanism you use. America, the country so great that even its haters refuse to leave. The Knife
Not an Avet but the Penn GS series is a great cod reel. I fish the 535 and 555 for deeper water. They hold a TON of braid. Theyre light and have a nice fast retrieve. If your looking for a reel I may be listing a 555 , and a shimano Triton Mark 3 also a good reel. mitchman
Thanks for the input. Im leaning towards the LX. I think the fact that I will be doin a lot of party/headboat fishing calls for a larger reel that can control your bait and fish better. Plus I could use it for tuna jigging too. Bayside Arty
I have The Older Avet LX works Great for Cod but Im sure the 2 speed version would help but its not needed SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKE SLINKIES - NOT REALLY GOOD FOR ANYTHING BUT THEY BRING A SMILE TO YOUR FACE WHEN PUSHED DOWN THE STAIRS. fishgeg
Might I also recommend a Saltiga 40 or even the Saltist 40 with an upgraded drag. They are one speed, non-lever drag but very powerful.
