PurpelNoon
Seems like 1 out of 10 people nowadays will say thanks for holding a door open for them or letting someone get in front of you on the road. By the way, having lots of money sure is no guarantee for having any manners. Even worse actually. In fact, it seems the "entitlement" attitude is alive and well, more than ever. hooktup
I used to tell the new analyst that started working at my company that Harvard forgot to teach them manners 101. jigger
Manners start in the home. So if it is not the norm in a house hold. Then it is not going to happen any were else. SOL #
Fishing Goddess
Remember what you learned in kindergarten - always say "Please" and "Thank you." But I hear you - it's no longer the norm. Probably best if you don't expect it - then are pleasantly surprised when it happens.
Patrick9915
That's why I'll let a door slam in a person's face now. Unless they're old or disabled. That's just rude.

Ive thought about doing that but then I will slam it unintentionally in a good person's face and I will feel like the jerk.

Just do it. Odds are, they weren't going to say thanks anyway.
m5n465
The thing that gets my goat (and I see it more and more often) is when somebody sticks the nose of their car out in traffic at a stop sign or an exit from a parking lot like it's their right to make you slam on your brakes just so they don't have wait, and then you let them go and they don't even give you a wave. Common courtesy seems to have gone the way of the dinosaur. I still hold doors for people, but if they treat me like I'm the doorman as they walk past, a loud "You're Welcome" usually gets their attention. Fluke Jr
Just do it. Odds are, they weren't going to say thanks anyway. its funny though. if you do hold the door for them, they wont say thanks. but if you let the door close in their face, theyll get pissed off at you. kinda funny how it works
MikeMc
When I hold the door for someone and they don't thank me, I tell them 'you're welcome' quite loudly. You know it must be a penguin bound down if you hear that terrible screaming and there ain't no other birds around.

People will pull out a little bit and then cut you off and then wave. They wave like I was doing them a favor. I like to yell "you're welcome!" but instead of "you're welcome", I yell "you're a ****ing ******bag!" So it's sort of the same thing.
mybeach
Out here, the women don't expect a man to hold the door open, and it takes them totally by surprise. They actually stop all forward movement and look at me like I am going to jack them with a sock of nickels or something. IT is a different culture indeed. If you are holding the door open as a gentlemanly gesture, it is quite unlike a gentleman to seek credit for the gentlemanly deed, regardless if it is deserved, and in fact, no thanks is needed. A curt nod of the head as the woman passes through is entirely appropriate, and a nod in return is proper. It should be satisfaction enough that you remembered that dear ol' dad taught you to be a gentleman. That woman will remember you, indeed. If you actually try to slam a door in someones face, you are no gentleman. You are an offensive oaf.
