R-series was for RED P-was from early 80's thru late 80's. Rell came with aluminum base,spool, and post, star, and handles. G- late 80's to early 90's..All aluminum parts were graphite composition. S- late 90's to present.. graphite parts// then there was the C series,no letter series... there was 5 generations of reels.. With all different changes... The star and handle are polished aluminum and the retainer plates are stainless steel. Also, the clicker is stainless steel and not plastic like the "S" series. All Newells are made in the USA.
