I have not heard anything official of the licenses. I wish the other states would adopt Maines requirements - 20 to 26 inches and any one fish over 40 inches- it protects the breeding class of fish 26+ to 39, yet still allows for sport fishing and a dinner on the table. I'm sure others will chime in on what is perfect, but much like the highway speed limit enforcement and proper measurement are variables to be considered too.

or at very least have a uniform law regarding size and qty for all states on the eastern sea board

This topic has been beaten to death and the fact is that Maine may be the only state that allows 1 fish. the rest of the east coast has a two a day limit. We had an extensive thread on this a few months ago.

It's not that I want to keep two a day because I don't keep fish, but I would have loved to catch two a day!!!! The majority of fish espesially this season were killed to the south of us. The license is only another way to raise revenue ift won't rasie the stock or sop poaching or pogie boats and seals.

I don't think the decline in fishing in Maine (particularly this season) has anything to do with the slot limit. There just isn't that much saltwater fishing pressure in Maine. I love fishing up there since i don't have to fish with a guy casting over my head from behind and 4 across my line like I do half the time in MA.

Its hard enough now for me to bring home a fish for my wife (she's Norwegian and loves to eat striper). I usually keep 2 or 3 a season, but I just couldn't take one over 30", even if I was allowed to. I would start thinking of the years its survived and the bigger fish are so..majestic... maybe. I know its just a personal thing.

I agree, caught a 34 incher 2 years ago and kept it ( caught in ma, ate it ma.) and after it was all done. I realised how precious that fish can be. 99% of the time I no longer keep them, handle them briefly, carefully- then back into the water.

The new license will have no affect on size limits. The base requirements are set by the Feds and the states adjust them to meet their needs while staying under the Fed requirement.

At the last meeting I went to the license will be reqiured as of 1/1/09. You will be able to obtain it over the internet for free for the first two years. During that two years the state can implment it's own license or just let the Feds handle it.
