sean curry
Hi Guys, I am going to have a 9' spinner rod rated for up to 2 1/2 or 3 oz. made I will use the rod from time to time, but It is mostly for my kids and guests. I am mostly a squidder/newell/abu guy. I enjoy the classic reels. I am interested in what you think or the Penn 710 vs. The Mitchell 302 vs. the Dam Quick 330. I know that parts will be an issue in the future. Am I missing something in this class? Thanks for any insight, sean
bospa357
I could suggest a plethora of newer very fine reels in the same size class. But, since you mentioned liking the classics, the 710 would be my choice among those offerings just beause of your last thought about part availability. Another consideration would be an older Penn 550SS. That's what I use for a loaner for friends and or my grandson.

ShipWrecked
Parts for 302's isnt going to be a issue and theres tons of 302s to be had. If it breaks buy a beater 302 for parts.

The 710 and the Quick 330 are not too far apart size-wise but the Mitchell 302 is a big bear of a reel, nowhere near the other two. You should be looking at something like a Mitchell 306 to stay in that general size range, and even it's a bit bigger than a 710. I own all three and fish the 710 and the 306 fairly regularly. Probably more than a little partial to the 306 since it's fitted with a factory original manual pickup. The Quick's been packed away for ages and isn't very likely to go fishin' again. danflytr
I own all three and my choice would be the penn 710 and I will tell you why. The 710 is lighter weight with a smoother drag system. The Mitchel 302 has a larger line capacity but the bail seams to get in the way when making long cast("torquing the rod when casting"). Now the 330 quick has the same trouble as all of the quicks had with their drag system self adjusts when fighting fish. I own them all as far as quick reels are concern(110,220,330,550,including some of the right handed models like the 331,221...etc. Don't ask me why I purchase so many if the drags where so much trouble, all I can say is they where priced right. tandom
I Have the 710Z penn, the 306 pum and 406 mitchells and a Quick model 440N. I use them in salt water on a regular basis and have not a problem with any.

mako20ft
710 with a 306 roller I have extra 302 Bailess kits I'd like to work with and potentially use on my 710Z. Do you have any additional pics of the pieces used making this Greenie bailess? Dutch The wheels on my reels go round and round...round and round...round and round... sean curry
Thanks guys, I bought a nice 306 off ebay from a fellow in Holland. Cam with a softcase, spool filler, and line holder. Pics looked real nice. It is the Albatros model. $29. I'll let you know how it works out. Should be here in a week or so. I think the drag is leather. Has anyone cut a ht-100 or smoothie to fit it? sean
