ThatGuyDownTheStreet
Which one would be recomended? It'll be on a 9-10 foot rod. It'll do chunking, plugging and everything in between, and may see a dunk or two here or there. Braid will most likley be used, with a spare spool of mono. Any advice? Thanks in advance. Sgt Striper
Both are the same , one is green the other is black, and the later Z's have the anodized spool, early one have the cast alum. spool.
Gollum
Yup. They are the same except for the color. The green 704 has a metal medallion on the side plate whereas the black 704z has a black/gold/red/blue medallion on the side plate. 704Z - 704 (also called a "greenie") - (Thanks to Pennman for the picture from the BST). So really the question is - Blond or brunette? How we wish to catch a fish so juicy sweet.

ThatGuyDownTheStreet
Same thing, hmm. So could you swap spools from a Z to an equal size Greenie? If so, which is more braid friendly? sc537
And if the both reels are in the same condition you will more than likely pay more for the green 704.
Gollum
Same thing, hmm. So could you swap spools from a Z to an equal size Greenie? If so, which is more braid friendly? Yes, the spools are equivalent sizes, if you aren't interested in how it works. I've never used braid on my 704z, but I've heard that the anodized spool (the gold one) is better for braid. The plain black spools, I understand, can catch a little more because of the way it is painted. I've also heard that reels are finicky some 704s like braid better, some 704z's like braid better, though I've not had that experience. How we wish to catch a fish so juicy sweet. ThatGuyDownTheStreet
So if I had a greenie, I could use a gold spool for braid? I figure on getting whatevers avaliable in good condition at a good price, If thats the case. J Barbosa
I never liked the green ones. They are so ugly but (*member formerly known as 'JohnB.')

You just don't usually see 704s with a 704z spool. How we wish to catch a fish so juicy sweet.
Ditch Jigger
Same thing, hmm. So could you swap spools from a Z to an equal size Greenie? If so, which is more braid friendly? Yes. Neither. But all of the spools love Fireline "…if catching fish is your only objective, you are either new to the game or too narrowly focused on measurable results.” - D. sean curry
The greenies and some of the early Z's come with torpedo handles, I think. Some find the torpedo to their liking more than the rubber one. My 704 has both the rubber "T" handle and a round 706 replacement handle. I don't spin that much, but I like the torpedo shape better on squidders and such. I have a lot of respect for the 704/706 reels. Mine is mostly used by Laura and guests. It has stood up very well. I did but the replacement drag knob. I went thru 2 of the plastic originals. Not sure if it was user error or not. sean
ThatGuyDownTheStreet
So if the parts are interchangable, Ill just go with whichever is more convinent to buy. How about dunking? Yes. Neither. But all of the spools love Fireline I figured I'd get that. Are you saying that neither work with braid? Or that they both work good with braid? confusionconfusion What about the greenies with the silver sideplate and blue/green stripes? rocket500
None of the older Penn reels are ideal for braided lines. Fireline works better. The one with the aluminum sideplate is the same as a greenie, other than that sideplate. All parts are interchangable between all of the 704 reels.
